For students who travel from afar to spend time in an English-speaking country, staying with a family can provide a measure of comfort and safety.
Having a student stay with you will bring some excitement and variety into your home life.
If you have done your TEFL course and are looking at starting to work in the TEFL field, having a student stay with you can be a fun and rewarding experience. Provided you have a spare room and the time to spend with the student, there is no reason why you shouldn’t open up your home. Eating breakfast together and spending some time chatting in the evenings is a great opportunity for the student to practise their speaking and listening skills, while for you it can provide insight into another culture (as well as an extra income).
Of course, you never know who your student will be, but chances are it will be someone easy to get along with. People who decide to leave their lives and put themselves in the challenging situation of living in a foreign country where they don’t speak the language are usually open-minded and easy-going. Indeed, many people who choose to host students end up having friends for life.
The nature of language schools is such that students can enrol on a weekly basis; in other words, every Monday there will be new students and every Friday some students will leave. There is no set course for the students so they may stay for just a week or a few months. What this means for you, of course, is the same applies to students who may stay with you: you might have a French doctor with you for a week and then a South Korean university student for a month. Having a student stay with you will bring some excitement and variety into your home life.
