When students study at a language school, they can choose to stay in the school residence or in a homestay.
It’s a great way to meet new people and earn a little extra income.
Homestays are able to provide a very different living situation. Staying with locals means that students can experience the lifestyle of the city they are living in, for a truly authentic experience. Living with a host means that you are forced to communicate with them on a daily basis and so practise your English, and not be able to fall back on your home language as you possibly could with other students. This is why it’s so important if you are a host to spend time with your student.
If you look in the local papers or on Gumtree, you will see adverts from the various schools looking for homestays. Especially during the summer months, when there are a lot of students at the schools, they are often in need to homes for the students to stay in. Hosting a student just requires a spare room and a commitment to eating certain meals and spending time with the student. Once you have expressed an interest in being a host the school will visit you to have a look at your house and chat to you to ensure your suitability. If they are satisfied, you will be allocated a student and paid a weekly rate to host the student. Due to the nature of language schools a student may stay with you for a week or a couple of months, but in either case it’s a great way to meet new people and earn a little extra income.
