Accreditation is a tricky business in the world of Teaching English as a Foreign Language. As strange as it may sound, there is no one international accrediting body for TEFL. Instead there are many smaller, different bodies which offer accreditation to TEFL schools and TEFL courses. The thing is, it’s very easy for a TEFL course provider to say they are accredited when, in fact, they’re not or the accreditation is nothing more than a sticker on a website. However, there are ways and means to ascertain the validity of TEFL accreditation.
First of all, have a look at the website of the online TEFL course provider and see what accreditation stickers they are advertising for their institution. Let’s look at the TEFL Academy as an example, because we’re open and transparent like that. The TEFL Academy is accredited by the World TEFL Accrediting Commission (WTEFLAC), Training Qualifications UK (Qualifi) and The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulations (Ofqual). These accrediting bodies are certainly mouthfuls, but how do we know they are legitimate? Well, some simple sleuth work will provide you with all the answers.
WTEFLAC is an international body which provides accreditation for TEFL courses all over the world. If you are looking to teach English abroad then you need a TEFL course which has international accreditation because your future employers may not be familiar with UK accrediting bodies. WTEFLAC only accredits TEFL courses that have been regulated and assess by them. Qualifi is a UK organisation which also requires courses to pass certain tests of quality in order to be given accreditation. In other words, you cannot simply buy accreditation. Finally, Ofqual is a UK governmental organisation; enough said.
Finding out about what accreditation a TEFL course has shouldn’t be hard. The course providers should not be shy about letting you know what accreditation they have. At The TEFL Academy we aim to be open and transparent on all aspects relating to our TEFL courses, because we have nothing to hide. In fact, on The TEFL Academy’s website we even provide links to our accreditation bodies so you can see for yourself that they are legit.
So when you’re looking for the TEFL online course of your dreams, look for a list of accredited TEFL courses online. Pay attention to exactly who the accrediting bodies are and then you can make a decision regarding which is the best online TEFL course for you and your future career Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Clearly, the accreditation that The TEFL Academy has is recognised and trustworthy. Why would you settle for anything less?
