Argentina is one of the more popular South American countries to visit and, as luck would have it, it’s an ideal destination for TEFL teachers.

Finding a TEFL job in Argentina

You can try to find a job through an online jobs board, but it’s just as easy (if not easier) to arrive in Buenos Aires with just your CV and a whole bunch of enthusiasm and apply for jobs when you get here. There are so many language schools in particular that you will be able to spend your first few days pounding the pavements, introducing yourself and you’ll probably end up with a few job offers.

In terms of visas, the majority of TEFL teachers in Argentina work on tourist visas. A tourist visa is valid for 90 days, after which it’s very easy to renew by popping over to Uruguay for a quick visit. What this means is that you don’t need to worry about getting a work visa before you arrive, but also that you will be paid in cash. If you’d rather not work illegally, you need to discuss this with your employer, as you’ll need a job offer to apply for a visa and while the school should provide assistance, it will be up to you to organise.

Teaching English in Argentina

TEFL teachers are in high demand in Argentina, particularly in Buenos Aires. It’s possible to find a job in public or private schools, or language centres. Native speakers are especially popular as there are loads of Argentinian, Venezuelan or Brazilian teachers of English and schools prefer teachers with a native accent. However, even though there are plenty of teaching jobs available, you might find yourself working for more than one employer so even if you are teaching in school, you will be able to find private lessons in the evenings or on weekends to supplement your income.

Living in Argentina

Living in Argentina gives you the opportunity to discover a beautiful country, diverse in terms of its geography and its people. Way down south you’ll find the glaciers in the wilds of Patagonia; in the north you can visit the spectacular Iguazu Falls; if you head west you’ll soon be enjoying an award-winning glass (or bottle!) of wine in the vineyards of Mendoza; or, if you’re a big city fan, you’ll feel right at home in bustling Buenos Aires. Wherever you find yourself in Argentina, you are guaranteed a warm welcome by the locals – you may be surprised at how at home you feel in such a faraway country.

Though salaries may not seem very high, they are more than adequate to sustain a very comfortable lifestyle here, as living costs are relatively low. Accommodation is one cost that may dent your income, so it’s common to live in a house- or flatshare. Besides this, though, as a TEFL teacher you’ll be able to live a life of good food, good wine and good people – what more can you ask for?
