Best Countries To Teach English Abroad In 2019

Join a global community of over 200,000 TEFL teachers working throughout the world! Enrol me!

If you were to ask what are the best countries to teach English abroad in 2019, which would you say?

Vietnam? Yes!

Czech Republic? Absolutely!

Italy? Of course!

The thing is, no matter which country you choose, it probably is a good country to teach English as a Foreign Language in. We don’t think we can put together a list of the best countries to teach abroad in, because how are we going to judge that? The countries that pay the best salaries? The countries that allow you the best lifestyles? Possibly the countries that have the least working hours? Everyone’s needs are different so there surely can’t be just one list.

Instead, we thought we’d put together a list of the most popular countries to teach English abroad in in 2019 which will suit everyone.

The best country for saving money: South Korea

South Korea is still one of the best countries for saving money. TEFL jobs in South Korea usually come with a generous package which includes flights, accommodation and health insurance, so you are able to save a large chunk of your salary. Unless, of course, you spend all your hard-earned money on the amazing travelling opportunities there!

The best country for living your best life: Spain

Spain is at the top of many TEFL teachers’ lists at the moment. And who can blame them? Living in Spain means living a good life. You are sure to party harder than you work, the weather is good and the food even better. Salaries can start quite low but the cost of living is low too, meaning that you’ll earn enough to enjoy your lifestyle and still be able to afford weekend trips around Europe.

The best country for culture shock: Japan

East meets West and the past meets the present in Japan. International business is booming in Japan so there are TEFL jobs for everyone. Language schools, government schools and universities are all on the lookout for TEFL teachers. Japan has so much to offer by way of beautiful natural landscapes, fascinating history and interesting cultural practices that if you can get over the culture shock you’ll most certainly have an experience to remember.

The best country off the beaten track: Kazakhstan

Yes we’re being serious! Kazakhstan is the world’s biggest land-locked country and it’s full of surprises for those of you brave enough to discover them. The demand for TEFL teachers is growing and positions are well-paid, presumably because not many TEFL teachers are adventurous enough to consider living here.

The best country for the masses: China

If you prefer the road more travelled, then China is the place for you. There are loads of jobs available for TEFL teachers so you can pick the one which suits you best. You can choose between working in a big city or a small, remote village, but wherever you go you are sure to have a genuine Chinese adventure.

The best country if you don’t have a degree: Colombia

Perhaps a surprising choice but Colombia is fast becoming the new destination to go to. Colombia is now politically stable and tourist-friendly. In fact, it has one of the fastest growing economies in Latin America and this means there are loads of jobs for TEFL teachers. With vibrant cities and breathtaking natural landscapes, Colombia has something to offer everyone.

The best country if you don’t have experience: Thailand

Thailand has always been a favourite with TEFL teachers, probably because it is such a welcoming country, in so many ways. While you do need a degree to get a work visa in Thailand, schools are more than happy to take on new teachers. Newbies can earn a bit of money, get some experience and live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

The best country for families: United Arab Emirates

You may be surprised to find the Middle East on this list, but you shouldn’t be. The United Arab Emirates should be a consideration for any serious TEFL teacher – we say serious teacher because you need to be highly qualified to teach here. You need a TEFL certificate but also a degree in English or Education – preferably a Master’s degree – and loads of experience. But the thing about the UAE is that not only are you well-compensated and appreciated for your work, but your family is welcome as well. Employers here prioritise family life so are more than happy to help with relocating families and setting you up comfortably.

Do you agree with our choices? Which top TEFL destination will we find you in in 2019?

Comments:

Hi, I recently gained my TEFL and Have a BA in business. My aim is to find work in the Middle East. However , I feel I lack the experience. Have you any advice?

Question: my son is 22 and is very interested in going to Taiwan to tach English. He only has an AA degree—is this sufficient?

Gail Marasse, 31st August 2019

I am thrilled to read about this but also very pained that there are no opportunities for the non- natives.
