Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles and that really should be enough of a reason for you to want to visit there. Luckily for us, though, there are about a million more reasons! Here are 7 reasons Thailand should be on your bucket list.

The food

All we’re going to say is, come to Thailand hungry! Thai green curry, tom yung goong (spicy prawn soup), som tum (spicy green papaya salad) and pad thai are just a few of the many dishes Thailand is famous for. But even though Thailand is known for loads of different dishes, the everyday dishes that you buy from the street vendors are just as mouthwateringly good.

The weather

Sun, sun and more sun…with a sprinkle of rain.  Generally speaking, Thailand is warm and sunny. Some months some people might find it pretty hot (ok, unbearable) and other months are quite wet (ok, torrential), but if you prefer to leave your jerseys in your cupboard, Thailand is a good place to come, no matter the time of year.

The beaches

Sun, sea, sand. Repeat. If we had our way this would be the story of our lives. In Thailand, it really can be. If long, sandy, white beaches and clear turquoise waters are your idea of the perfect beach destination then you’ve come to the right place. What’s more, there’s a beach to suit everyone. Looking for a party island? Head to Koh Phangan. A diving island? Koh Tao. A chilled island? Koh Chang. No matter what kind of beach you’re looking for, rest assured there’ll be a suitable beach nearby.

7 Reasons Thailand Should be on Your Bucket List

The culture

Thailand has a fascinating history and culture and this is evident in daily life in Thailand. Buddhism will affect your life in many ways if you live in Thailand, as you will be invited to take part in ceremonies or celebrate festivals and follow traditions. Plus there’s nothing more peaceful than spending an afternoon visiting spectacular temples, and with more than 40 000 temples in Thailand, you can’t go far without bumping into one.

The shopping

Once you’ve had your fair share of food and suntanning and temples, the next thing on your to-do list has to be shopping. Thailand has a huge amount of shopping malls and while those can be good for your day-to-day shopping, it’s the markets you want to experience. Food markets, tourist markets, clothes markets – you name it and you’ll find a market for it. Chatuchak Market in Bangkok is world-famous and with over 8 000 stalls there are not many things it doesn’t sell.

The travelling

Thailand has a lot to offer in terms of tourist destinations and it’s a big country, but luckily travelling around Thailand is cheap and cheerful. From Phuket in the south to Chiang Mai in the north and Bangkok in the middle, travelling by plane, train, bus or shuttle has never been more affordable and yet decently comfortable. Plus travelling to neighbouring countries is just as cheap and easy.

The people

And last but most certainly not least, the people. Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles for a very good reason. Thailand is a happy country, with locals being friendly and welcoming to tourists and travellers from any country. Walking the streets of any town and you’ll be amazed how friendly the locals are. That’s not to say the country is without its problems, but a smile is good for the soul and you’re sure to find smiles everywhere you go.

With South East Asia being one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, there are many reasons to visit the region. Thailand is definitely very high on that list and should definitely be a consideration if you are planning a trip. Better yet, why don’t you teach English as a Foreign Language in Thailand and experience the country on a more permanent basis?
