TEFL & Coronavirus (Covid-19) Latest Info

Join a global community of over 200,000 TEFL teachers working throughout the world! Enrol me!

Over the past year, billions of people around the world have had to put their plans on hold, and the idea of sipping a cocktail in the sand became a distant dream for many – but not TEFL teachers. The Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has had a massive impact on education worldwide and thus TEFL qualifications have become increasingly important in countries around the world. With international travel open for work purposes, now could be the opportunity to experience a new culture and lifestyle. A valid TEFL certificate can not only provide visa opportunities at this difficult time, but it also allows for online teaching from home. This article will be amended regularly and serves as a general guide on how Covid-19 is creating opportunities in the TEFL industry.

Are schools still recruiting for TEFL teachers?

Yes! Schools are still recruiting and are accepting applicants from different locations worldwide. Many teachers are still travelling to their chosen destination to teach abroad once qualified. In fact, there is a global shortage of English teachers worldwide, so countries that are in a position to safely welcome TEFL teachers are doing so. Countries like China, South Korea and Thailand have opened their borders and are offering both long and short-stay visas. In that sense, your TEFL certificate can act as your ticket to a new adventure overseas, as travelling for work purposes is deemed essential.

In the current highlighted series at The TEFL Academy, many alumni have made a break for the East when Coronavirus hit their home country, and are enjoying fewer restrictions overseas. For example, Rebecca Walsh packed her suitcase last March and has been teaching English in South Korea ever since, while Matthew Rees headed to Shanghai last November and is currently teaching English while enjoying relaxed restrictions.

Be mindful that travel restrictions remain in place in certain countries, and factor your own research into your travel plans. For example, while places like Cambodia and Thailand are welcoming TEFL teachers, there is a mandatory 14-day quarantine on arrival and in order to secure your visa, you must have a job secured before you arrive. Being able to travel for work is a luxury that not many people have, so grab the opportunity and make the most of your time while the rest of the world is somewhat on hold. These extra steps it may take you to get to your chosen destination will absolutely be worth it when you’re making your first footsteps in the sand. We will try to provide some countries insights in the article below, however, we urge TEFL teachers to check government advice before departing from their home country.

Unprecedented demand for online TEFL teachers

Over the last year countries have had to take measures to slow the spread of the virus, including the closure of schools, as a result there has been a huge increase in the demand for online teachers. One of the greatest strengths right now with a TEFL certification is the ability to access travel around the world and have the option of teaching online from anywhere. Both online and travel opportunities can be found at The TEFL Academy jobs board.

TEFL is fast becoming an ideal way for fluent English speakers to become digital nomads and earn money from home or anywhere around the world. Another advantage of this increased demand for online English teachers is that if you’re teaching in-class abroad, and there is a sudden school closure, you can always take your classes online and still have an income while you wait for the schools to reopen!

Our face-to-face courses

As the situation improves globally, the in-class element of our combined course can continue to go ahead in certain locations, but of course, this is location dependent. As of March 2022, courses are running in full across all locations.

The following classroom locations require proof of vaccination or immunity. Please ensure you have read the understood the requirements before booking:

Please note that anyone who has booked a combined course will be able to reschedule the 20hr face-to-face section of their course to a later date if their course is unable to go ahead. For those students with an upcoming course:

Firstly, we would like to assure you that the health and safety of our staff and students are of utmost concern and we are continually monitoring the situation worldwide.

As the situation varies greatly from country to country, we will assess whether or not a course will proceed on a case by case basis, which will be continually assessed.

If it is decided your course will not be going ahead, you will be contacted immediately and offered the opportunity to attend a classroom course at a later date.

Should the government advice of your area deem it safe for your course to proceed, we ask you to follow all advice and precautions provided to you included in the government advice of your area.

In addition to this, should you have travelled overseas recently, or should you or a family member feel unwell, please do not attend the course and instead contact us to reschedule your classroom course.

Please stay up to date on the advice in your location and contact us should you have any concerns.
