Teaching English as a Foreign Language seems to have a bit of a reputation. It seems that most people regard TEFL as a job you do when you want to take a break from your usual employment, when you are taking a break between studying and formal work or when you don’t really know what to do with your life. In other words, TEFL is a job you decide to take to escape your life for a little while until you want to go back to the real world.

In fact, nothing can be further from the truth. There are a variety of different job options available, meaning that EFL is a definite option for your career. So let’s look at a few possible career options in the TEFL field:

TEFL teacher

The most common and well-known TEFL job, being a TEFL teacher can mean you teach students from kindergarten to university and beyond. You might teach a one-to-one student or classes of up to forty students, depending on where you are situated.

Social leader

Many students from all over the world travel to English-speaking countries during the summer to learn English on summer camps. On these camps, students will spend their mornings having English lessons while the afternoons and weekends are usually spent exploring the nearby towns or tourist attractions. There are many TEFL teachers involved in these camps, but there is also a need for social leaders, adults who are able to take responsibility for EFL learners on excursions. If you enjoy spending time with students but would rather not have the responsibility of planning lessons, this could be the job for you.

TEFL blogger

The TEFL field consists of a large connection of networks all around the world. The internet has become a great place for TEFL teachers to share thoughts, ideas and lesson plans. Starting your own blog and becoming a TEFL blogger will enable you to contribute to the field and help other teachers. If you utilise social media and the internet to further your own development as well as contribute to TEFL research, you could even present at a conference or work in partnership with a publishing house to develop materials. In this sphere, anything is possible.

Director of Studies

If you enjoy the TEFL world but you would rather not be involved in teaching, you could become a Director of Studies or another member of a management team in an EFL school. Working in an EFL school can be just as rewarding and exciting as teaching, but can be better suited to you if you prefer to work in an office environment.

Deciding to become involved in TEFL does not necessarily mean that you need to be a teacher. There are numerous other jobs which are available to suit your skills, which will still provide you with the enjoyment of being involved in the exciting world of Teaching English as a Foreign Language and which could provide you with employment for as long as you want it to.
