My name is Kyra Nefdt (@kyraoreillynefdt) and I am from the sunny and friendly Cape Town, South Africa. I am a recent graduate, with a double major in Psychology and Chinese Language at UCT (University of Cape Town).
I started my TEFL course in March 2019, during my final year at university, as I desperately felt I needed to do something alongside my studies. I knew that I always had a love for languages and learning, and after asking around, I soon discovered The TEFL Academy!
It all started with one spur-of-the-moment decision. Flashback to registration day in my first year in university. Scanning down the list of course options, my eyes landed on 'Chinese Language and Literature'. An option I would never have considered before.
Flash forward to an unforgettable exchange program to China, and a bachelor's degree in Psychology and Mandarin Chinese – the bug had bitten me. My fascination with foreign cultures and working with people had piqued! And I knew I could not let it fade.
TEFL seemed like a natural fit. I signed up with The TEFL Academy right before South Africa went into lockdown, and since then I have never looked back. I am currently teaching online and am amazed at how rewarding it has been. I am still able to meet new people, experience vastly different cultures, and help language enthusiasts from all over the world develop their English skills! I love interacting with people from different countries and cultural backgrounds which has most definitely helped me stay sane during the pandemic! I have even made a couple of new friends, it does not hurt to have contacts in different parts of the world!
To be completely honest, when I first started the 168-hour TEFL course, I was very unsure of what to expect. I had no idea what the course was going to be like and was quite frankly, very nervous! However, not once did I feel overwhelmed with the course content. And I believe this was mainly down to the fact that I was studying through The TEFL Academy. Studying through TTA was an absolute breeze. The professionalism and attention to detail is evident from the second you sign up. Emails and queries are replied to in a timely manner, assignments are marked within the allocated time frame and their support team is absolutely fantastic.
I finally discovered a career that I not only love but one that has allowed me to work from the comfort of my home whilst also providing me with a future opportunity to travel abroad. I think we all know how challenging times have been recently and it is comforting to know that I have and will always have an opportunity to find a job, no matter where I am in the world.
So, stop procrastinating! Take that leap, do that course, and watch yourself grow alongside new opportunities you would never have dreamed would come your way.
