During my teaching contract in Nepal, I was provided with the most incredible opportunity to teach and live in a local mountain village within Panauti, just 1-2 hours out of the capital city, Kathmandu.
Initially I wasn't quite sure what exactly I was embarking on and if I had made the right decision teaching in a tiny mountain village with minimal running water and electricity. I soon realised however that it was the best decision I had ever made.
I stayed in the most picturesque location with a friendly, large family with an older son who spoke English well in a beautiful home which housed 6 people, 1 cow, 6 goats and a pregnant buffalo.
There is simply no other way to travel, whilst truly immersing yourself into another culture, then to become a member of such communities and live their everyday lives as your own. Upon arrival at the school, all 100 children flooded out of the small, muddy classrooms to chase our bus and greet us. I soon discovered that I was the first Westerner to ever stay in this village. The school was small, poorly resourced with dirty classrooms. The teachers were dedicated, welcoming, caring and giving. The children were happy, grateful, loving, polite and energetic. These latter qualities make it the most fantastic educational setting for any adult to work in.
Every day in the Shree Kamala Devi School was a blessing, faced with new challenges, new obstacles and new smiles. The simple pop-up books, balloons, bubbles, pens and paper I bought as gifts fascinated staff, children, parents and village members alike. I became an honourary member of the village, greeted, welcomed and respected by all. I wouldn’t trade my experiences for the world and very much look forward to milking my next buffalo!
I am so glad I decided to take a TEFL course with The TEFL Academy, the qualification has opened my life up to experiences I never thought would be possible. The training I received was excellent and I really appreciated all of the additional support I received. All I can say is THANK YOU!!!
