A journalist who wrote a new story as a teacher Paloma Tiba
I was studying at University and although I enjoyed my subject, my heart was not in it. I needed a change - something exciting. I started searching and I found The TEFL Academy.
I was full of excitement learning that I could travel the world and teach English - that was the dream.
I finished that year but I kept thinking about doing a TEFL Course. By November, I decided that I was going to start. I am so glad that I chose The TEFL Academy and started my teaching abroad.
I found a job in Marmaris in Turkey at a private school. As there isn’t another TEFL teacher in the school I teach all the age groups from 7 to 35-year-olds.
In my first lesson, I had butterflies in my stomach. I taught a small group of 13-year-olds and had some games and icebreakers in my bag. After teaching my class for a few weeks I had improved the way I taught them but I still looked up the information from The TEFL Academy.
My TEFL course has taught me how to plan my lessons, how to teach grammar and most importantly ıt has helped me with finding the materials for making my lessons more fun. Even after a few weeks, I noticed that my students were more eager to learn and are improving every lesson and this is so rewarding.
My advice to any TEFL teacher is to have a fun pack of activities for your students and always smile. One of my funniest memories is when we were playing “Jenga” with my students. They hardly wanted to read, so a fun way to make my students read was to tell them about the device ‘Aleksa’ and trying to talk like her, all of my students were trying to speak in that voice. In the end, they laughed and enjoyed reading!
Marmaris is a lovely holiday resort. As I write, people are sunbathing and swimming at the beach and it’s only March! The Turkish coffee and food is delicious. The food can be quite spicy!
Every time my students see me, they run up to me and hug me and if they are far away from me they always shout my name or wave at me. This is why I love teaching English.
The TEFL Academy has given me the opportunity to see the world and to help students to learn English in a fun way so this can open so many opportunities for them in the future. I am happy at the moment in my school, but who knows where my next adventure will be in the future but what I do know is that I would like to travel to as many countries as I can and this is all thanks to The TEFL Academy and their amazing courses.
