A journalist who wrote a new story as a teacher Paloma Tiba
My name is Rebecca North and I am 25 years old. Before teaching English I was a Senior Travel Advisor for Thomson and I loved my job but I knew I wanted to do something totally different.
I took the TEFL Course as I wanted a change and I have worked with children before and I loved it. I also love to travel so I looked into teaching abroad and I knew it was what I wanted to do and looked like a great experience.
I am now living in Nanjing in China, I work at an English language school for children aged from 4 up to age 15. I thought it would be difficult with the language barrier but I have a Chinese Teaching Assistant which makes things very easy. There are funny classroom situations every day, where the Chinese culture is so different to ours my students say the funniest things. I will be staying at my current school for at least the next 3 years as I have now started an online degree in Business and Spanish as I only work 18 classroom hours a week, so aside from planning lessons we get a lot of free time.
I love living in China. Everything is so cheap so it’s really easy to save money, the culture is very different to the UK but I really like it as you have new experiences all the time. I love the people over here, they are so friendly and when I walk down the street people say “hello”. There aren’t many foreigners in my town so a lot of the older generation stare at us and are very intrigued. It's really cool and I feel like a celebrity sometimes. They even want to pose with me for a picture!
I do not have a degree but a lot of employers will accept a TEFL certification with 120 hours. Without the TEFL Course from The TEFL Academy I wouldn't be where I am today and I couldn't be happier.
My main advice to prospective students is “DO IT!” So many people dream about changing their lives but are too scared to take the leap. This is the best decision I've ever made and even though it might be difficult at first, stick with it and it'll be worth it in the end.
