About the project

Supporting and promoting English tuition in the developing world

The TEFL Academy Schools Programme is a charitable division of the academy set up to support and promote English tuition for the world’s poorest children.

This provides a unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience for the TEFL Academy student. A chance to advance their career, help those much less fortunate and experience some of the most fulfilling , colourful, rich and often wonderfully-traditional cultures that the world has to offer a new teacher.

We are currently working on projects in Brazil, Kenya and India. Our Bangladesh project has been up and running since last year!

Our school in Bangladesh provides free education for some of the village’s poorest children. Food and uniforms are provided by the school for all students. The school offers these children the chance to improve their prospects and in turn the chance to lift themselves and their families out of poverty.

Our Bangladesh volunteers have found it to be one of the most enriching experiences of their lives.

PROJECTS IN DEVELOPMENT

Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with a population of over 150 million people. 26% of the population live on less than $2USD a day. 48 per cent of children are malnourished.

Our school in Bangladesh is the first project for the Schools Programme and has been up and running since last year. The school provides free education to the children of a small village near Sylhet. Free uniforms are provided for all students and the curriculum aims to prepare pupils for national examinations.

Brazil

Brazil has the ninth-largest economy in the world, but it’s blighted by extreme inequality. The richest 10% of Brazilians enjoy half of the country’s income, while the poorest 10% receive less than 1%. Half of the country’s 60 million children live in poverty.

We are teaming up with two international educational charities in order to supply volunteer English teachers to schools throughout the poorest regions of the country. Click “Get Involved” to register your interest.

Kenya

Economic growth in Kenya has enhanced life for some, but approximately 11 million people are malnourished. Natural disasters, such as floods and droughts, mean in some areas food supplies get affected: this is especially likely in semi-nomadic areas. In the drought-prone north, quality of life can be particularly poor as basic needs are not being met: sanitation, healthcare and running water are all limited. Extreme deprivation is faced by many in Kenya, and it is estimated 50% of the whole population live in some degree of poverty.

We are currently working to get the necessary permission to set up a similar school to our one in Bangladesh. There is a lot of red tape, but we are working hard to get things off the ground!

India

Our highly motivated staff in Mumbai are going the extra mile to identify the most needy communities and beneficiaries. Our down-to-earth, bottom-up approach will allow us to implement, evaluate and monitor our projects to address educational needs in the most efficient and effective way.

Our aim is to provide a free school in the slum regions of the city. We are currently negotiating venues for the project. Watch this space to get involved!
