How to begin teaching in Mozambique

Mozambique is surely one of Africa’s best-kept secrets. Though it is rich in natural beauty, a prolonged civil war meant that tourists stopped coming to Mozambique a long time ago. The war ended in 1992 though and, since then, the country has been politically stable so it won’t be long before the tourist crowds make their way back to its white, sandy beaches and warm waters.

Mozambique is a backpacker’s paradise, especially if you are a beach-lover. Bazaruto National Park is the obvious choice for visitors to Mozambique. A national park that protects the five islands of the Bazaruto archipelago, this is where you come to go swimming with dolphins, diving in crystal-clear waters, or take a dhow-safari. Pemba, Vilanculos, Tofo, and Inhambane are also popular destinations, not only for their beaches but also for their culture and nightlife.  The Mozambique coastline is also followed by tourists an impressive 1,535 miles in length.

Besides lounging on the beach, you can take a trip to the capital of Maputo and stroll down the historic jacaranda-lined streets and visit museums, cathedrals, and trading stations while soaking up the Portuguese heritage.

The official language of Mozambique is Portuguese. Estimated to be first explored in 1498 by the famous Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. The Portuguese returned in 1505 to colonize the country. Under Portuguese rule, Mozambique eventually gained independence in 1975. During the four centuries between, the country was regularly under attack from European, African and Muslim-orientated militaries.

The economy in Mozambique drastically changed in 2012 when a large natural gas reserve was discovered.

The official name of the country is the Republic of Mozambique. Interestingly, the country’s name is the highest-scoring country name in a game of Scrabble! ‘Mozambique’ scores an impressive 34 points.

In terms of surface area, Mozambique comes in as the 35th largest country in the world, with roughly 310,000 square miles of territory. With a population of 30+ million in 2019, the country ranks at the time of writing as the 47th largest country by population around the world.

The highest mountain in Mozambique stands at just over 8,000 feet above sea level. Called Monte Binga, it’s located at the border between Mozambique and Zimbabwe. You can visit the mountain by going to the Manica province via the Chimanimani Transfrontier Park.

Teaching opportunities

The official language of Mozambique is Portuguese and a few other local languages are spoken, namely Makuwa, Sena and Swahili, but there is a movement by the government to up the level of English in schools around the country, which means there is a need for English teachers.

As with many other African countries, there are numerous volunteering opportunities in Mozambique, many of which include participation in conservation programmes. Unfortunately, teaching in Mozambique often means teaching large classes with very few resources and no technology, so teaching here will be a challenge but you will be sure that you are giving back to a very needy and grateful community.
