Teaching English in Mozambqiue

Mozambique is a backpacker’s paradise, especially if you are a beach-lover.

Mozambique is surely one of Africa’s best-kept secrets. Though it is rich in natural beauty, a prolonged civil war meant that tourists stopped coming to Mozambique a long time ago. The war ended in 1992, though, and since then the country has been politically stable so it won’t be long before the tourist crowds make their way back to its white, sandy beaches and warm waters.

Mozambique is a backpacker’s paradise, especially if you are a beach-lover. Bazaruto National Park is the obvious choice for visitors to Mozambique. A national park which protects the five islands of the Bazaruto archipelago, this is where you come to go swimming with dolphins, diving in crystal-clear waters or to take a dhow-safari. Pemba, Vilanculos, Tofo and Inhambane are also popular destinations, not only for their beaches but also for their culture and nightlife.

Besides lounging on the beach, you can take a trip to the capital of Maputo and stroll down the historic jacaranda-lined streets and visit museums, cathedrals and trading stations while soaking up the Portuguese heritage.

Teaching Opportunities
The official language of Mozambique is Portuguese and a few other local languages are spoken, namely Makuwa, Sena and Swahili, but there is a movement by the government to up the level of English in schools around the country, which means there is a need for English teachers.

As with many other African countries, there are numerous volunteering opportunities in Mozambique, many of which include participation in conservation programmes. Unfortunately, teaching in Mozambique often means teaching large classes with very few resources and no technology, so teaching here will be a challenge but you will be sure that you are giving back to a very needy and grateful community.
