Teach English in Paraguay

Paraguay is a small, landlocked country in central South America. It is often overlooked by travellers visiting the area for other more popular countries like Brazil and Argentina, and that’s a shame. Paraguay is an adventure in its own right and not a country that should be dismissed easily.

Paraguay is great for those who enjoy the outdoors and being in nature. The name Paraguay comes from the Guarani word meaning ‘from a great river’ because there are many different rivers within the country. There are also many different nature reserves, especially good for birdwatching. Not far from the cities you can walk amongst ruins or visit lakes and waterfalls.

When hunger strikes you can dine at one of the many pizzerias or Korean restaurants or, if you prefer something a bit more local, you can try chipa – maize bread with egg and cheese – or akangue yvyguy – slow-cooked cow’s head!

Paraguay is a country of inequality – where expensive cars drive on cobblestone streets and street vendors sell their wares outside modern shopping malls – but it is a country worth experiencing. Once you have visited Paraguay you will understand the saying that people who visit Paraguay always cry twice – once when they arrive and once when they leave.

Paraguay is a trailblazer in terms of renewable energy in South America. The country has enormous water resources and access to two major rivers, the Paranna and the Rio Paraguay. In total, 99% of energy that the country produces comes from hydroelectric energy. A good percentage of this comes from the Itaipu dam, the biggest dam in the world.

Paraguay can also lay claim to having the first railway in South America. Going back to the 1800s, Paraguay was the richest country in South America as well as being a significant military power. The first railway extended from Asuncion to Encarnacion in the south of the country.

If you are interested in lacework Paraguay is the place for you. ‘Spiderweb’ or Nanduti in the vernacular is a stunning beautiful lace created in designs in a rainbow of different colours. Different traditional folk crafts include black clay work, embroidered cloth and ceramics as well as beautiful silver jewelry in filigree designs.

Like many other South American countries, Paraguay loves sports, like football, tennis and volleyball. Interestingly, football is equally as popular as fishing.

The official languages of Paraguay are Spanish and Guarani. The use of English is limited. Teaching opportunities are mostly in language schools in the capital city of Asuncion. Private lessons are commonly carried out by teachers to supplement their income. The salaries here are not high but neither is the cost of living, so while it may not be the best destination if you want to save money, you will easily be able to have a great lifestyle while you are there.

Just keep in mind the fact that punctuality is not a strong suit here so don’t expect your students to always be on time!
