How do I qualify to teach English in Peru?

To teach English in Peru you need a TEFL certificate and have native English fluency. You don’t need to have a Bachelor’s degree, but if you have one, your application will be much stronger.

  • Visa requirements: Many teachers work “under the table” on a 90-day tourist visa. This can further be extended to 180 days. Although this is common, it is not strictly legal. We recommend making yourself aware of the constraints and consequences of working in Peru on a tourist visa.
  • TEFL certification: Many English teaching jobs in Peru require a TEFL certification. We recommend a  Level 3 TEFL certificate with The TEFL Academy if you have some teaching experience under your belt. If not, a Level 5 TEFL certificate with 10 hours in-class teaching practice is a really great option.
  • Bachelor’s degree: Many universities and international schools require a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience: Previous teaching experience is a big advantage when looking for English teaching jobs in Peru, especially when applying for higher-paying jobs at international and private schools.
  • Insurance: Health insurance is recommended for anyone working abroad.
  • Start-up capital: You need to have some savings to cover expenses until you start earning a regular income. You may need anything from BZ$ 3,000 – BZ$ 4, 000 ($1,500 – $2000).
