Course options explained

With so much choice and such a vast amount of conflicting information available on the Internet, it can be difficult for potential TEFL course students to make the correct choice. The Level 5 version of our TEFL course is a more in-depth overview of TEFL and is a good choice if you wish to gain formal teaching jobs, which usually include accommodation, flight reimbursements and help in gaining a work visa. Upon completion, you will be awarded an internationally recognised Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168 hours), which is regulated by Ofqual (UK government) and DEAC-Approved (US Department of Education National Accreditor).

A regulated Level 5 qualification means that Ofqual (UK government) has approved the qualification to be at a recognised level of achievement. Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168hrs) is the same level as the following qualifications: a diploma of higher education (DipHE), a foundation degree and the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL qualifications.

We also offer a Level 3 version of our course, which is an introduction to TEFL and is perfect for anyone looking for casual work teaching English, such as volunteering, backpacking or finding work “in-country”, and some online teaching roles. It requires less of a time commitment (120 hrs) and is more cost-effective, so it can be a way of fast-tracking into the industry for someone with a short-term teaching plan. The course you should choose depends entirely on your own situation, needs and teaching plans.

All regulated Level 5 TEFL Diplomas are 150hrs+ in length. We have never seen a single employer ask for more than 168hrs of TEFL training.

Elena Pushkareva, TEFL Trainer

Elena started teaching English about 20 years ago, helping children with their homework and organising additional English language classes in Russia.

When she relocated to Brighton, Elena continued teaching English as a second language for some private homestays. However, soon she realised that she would like to pursue this as her future career and she got a job as a tutor of English in West Sussex County Council teaching migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. She completed DELTA and some additional training courses in Teaching English to Basic Literacy Learners and is specialised in this area. At present she is supervising and teaching refugees and asylum seekers as well as training teachers and ‘teachers-to-be’. Elena is very passionate about teacher training and strongly believes that our future is in blended learning (teaching using technology) so she loves experimenting and creating lessons of English using a range of gadgets and electronic devices.

Accreditation FAQ

The simple answer is, we just don't know! Recruiters offering the best opportunities with the most competitive packages are now asking for level 5 TEFL qualifications. All regulated level 5 courses are 150hrs+ in length. We have never seen a single employer ask for more than 168hrs of TEFL training.

A Level 5 TEFL Diploma is the gold standard of TEFL qualifications, therefore we only offer this option for our level 5 students.

We know that navigating your way through the TEFL web of courses is very confusing. This is why we try to keep it simple, giving you exactly what you need to get the best jobs around the world!

The Level 3 and Level 5 versions of our TEFL course are regulated by Ofqual (UK government department) and awarded by Qualifi, a UK government-recognised awarding body. The Level 3 and Level 5 versions of our TEFL course are DEAC-approved as meeting the criteria for Approved Quality Curriculum (AQC) status. The DEAC is a U.S. Department of Education National Accreditor.

The TEFL Academy is fully accredited by Qualifi an Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, a UK government department) regulated awarding body. Qualifi have robust quality assurance systems and procedures in place which all course providers must successfully pass in order to be accredited under the scheme.

Potential TEFL course students should remember that their prospective employers are likely to be based outside the UK. This means that accreditation bodies based solely in the UK may not be recognised by employers abroad. This is why The TEFL Academy has chosen Qualifi, as they offer international accreditation for training course providers.

You can find out more about Qualifi on their website: https://qualifi.net

The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England and vocational qualifications in Northern Ireland.

Ofqual is a non-ministerial UK government department.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

Ofqual recognise Awarding Organisations like Qualifi and regulate qualifications like ours. An Ofqual regulated TEFL qualification will be recognised worldwide and is highly respected by employers.

The Distance Education Accrediting Commission was founded in 1926 and is a U.S. Department of Education National Accreditor. DEAC's goal is to ensure a high standard of educational quality in the distance education institutions it approves by requiring compliance with its published standards, policies and procedures.

Our Level 5 TEFL Course is DEAC-approved as meeting the criteria for Approved Quality Curriculum (AQC) status.

You can find out more about the DEAC on their website: https://www.deac.org/

When you hear about “levels” this refers to the UK government’s framework for qualifications. This framework allows learners studying UK government regulated qualifications to understand where their qualification sits in comparison to other qualifications. A regulated level 5 qualification means that Ofqual (UK government), have approved the qualification to be at a recognised level of achievement. Our Level 5 TEFL Diploma (168hrs) is the same level as the following qualifications: a diploma of higher education (DipHE), a foundation degree and the CELTA and Trinity CertTESOL qualifications.

A TEFL Diploma is simply a slightly higher level of qualification than a "Certificate". It means you will have completed a more in-depth TEFL course.

A regulated qualification means that it is officially recognised by government and sits on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

Choosing to study a regulated qualification is your guarantee of quality. Course providers offering regulated qualifications must comply with very tough quality assurance rules and procedures. This ensures that:

  • The staff delivering and assisting students are suitably qualified
  • The course provider has the resources to effectively deliver the qualification
  • The course itself effectively teaches and assesses the qualifications aims
  • The contents of the course have been written and designed by industry professionals and peer reviewed
  • The feedback and grades given to learners is fair, moderated and meets modern academic standards
  • Officially regulated by the UK government, therefore the qualification will be internationally recognised by schools, employers, foreign embassies and governments of most other countries.

Any qualification that is officially recognised by the UK government will sit on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications. Make sure to ask your course provider to provide a link to the register for their qualification.

You can verify our qualifications on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications:

Level 3 here,
Level 5 here.

You may see cheap TEFL courses advertised online that claim to be a “level”, such as “Level 5 140-Hour TEFL Course” (often advertised on daily deal websites), unfortunately these courses are not the level they claim to be and are highly misleading.

The level of a course tells learners where the qualification sits on the UK’s Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF).  If a course is not listed on the Register of Regulated Qualifications, then it is not really a level at all. You can find our qualification on the register here.

Make sure you ask any TEFL training provider that claims to be offering a “level” of TEFL course to provide a link to the Register of Regulated Qualifications. If they cannot provide this, then the qualification is not the level they claim it to be and will not be accepted by foreign embassies and employers.

TEFL and TESOL are both acronyms for teaching English to non-native English speakers. Both acronyms can be used to describe qualifications which certify you to teach English as a foreign language. To a large extent, "TEFL" and "TESOL" are used interchangeably.

  • TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language
  • TESOL - Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

  • Q. How satisfied were you with the webinar course? A. I was nervous before it started, I was intimidated about presenting infront of lots of people but Ryan made everyone feel at ease. I had hit a bit of a stand off with the 2nd assignment and got stuck in a rut. But after doing the webinar it gave me more ideas around tasks and lesson planning and I really enjoyed the webinar
  • Q. How satisfied were you with your TEFL Trainer? A. Ryan made us feel at ease. He popped in to the breakout sessions and gave us ideas when we were struggling and everyone was at a different stage in the course and he didn't make anyone feel silly for asking questions or that we were taking up extra time.

  • Q. How satisfied were you with the classroom element of the course? A. Rachel was a really great instructor...super experienced, knowledgeable and approachable. I really enjoyed learning from her over the 1 day and she helped all of us blend as a group to support one another as well which was fantastic.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with your TEFL Tutor? A. Rachel was approachable, knowledgeable, sensitive to our needs and difficulties, clear with her teaching and instruction and also quite funny which helped settle our nerves. I felt we were lucky to have her as a tutor, especially considering her experience.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with the classroom element of the course? A. I really enjoyed the class! Tiffany was an amazing teacher! I loved the fact that we were given the chance to create our own lesson plans and practice teaching with our peers. This class I think really sets you up for what you will be doing once you find a job. And of course, it was very educational.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with the TEFL Tutor? A. Tiffany was awesome! I really appreciate her attitude, you could tell she enjoyed teaching. She was also super supportive and really helpful as far as when we had questions. She took the time to help make sure we understood what we're learning.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with the webinar course? A. I was very pleased with the course, because it provided such a relaxed, respectful and supportive environment in which to collaborate with other TEFL course participants, in what had, up to that point, been a solitary pursuit. I was impressed with the range of skill in the group and how seriously everyone was taking their assignments. I also loved the fact that a couple of individuals in our group even had extensive teaching experience and were still learning new things in this webinar, which I thought was a great testament to its relevancy and practical use. The portion where we had to pretend to be TEFL learners studying Korean was brilliant and it allowed us to have more empathy for the challenges of learning a second or foreign language which is very different than our own.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with your TEFL Trainer? A. I thought she did a great job, and was very thorough, allowing just the right time for break out groups and collaborative assignments. She was also generous with her time, after the 10 hour course was over, to receive questions and give advice. Her passion for the material and TEFL instruction was obvious and her past experience relevant, which she shared just enough of to bring the course to live and make it less abstract. I had feared it might be dry and tedious to sit for 10 hours through a webinar, but the time went by surprisingly quickly and it was pleasantly interesting and fun.
  • Q. How satisfied were you with your TEFL Tutor? A. Michael was excellent in getting through much of the heavy material, grammar especially. He was able to speak about his own experiences, giving many examples and made the content relateable in the teaching world today.
