TEFL jobs in Hong Kong are, for many people, the perfect combination of the challenges and rewards which may face an EFL teacher. Hong Kong’s location, mixture of Eastern and Western heritage, its culture and cuisine are themselves a tempting combination of inducements. However, when further examining the working conditions in this impressively cosmopolitan area, you may discover it has even more to offer.
EFL positions in Hong Kong offer a competitive salary. In fact, they offer a salary which is not only competitive, but one which is easily within the top ten highest EFL salaries worldwide. With such a benefit teachers can afford to live comfortably amongst the stylish skyscrapers of this modern autonomous territory. Adequate accommodation is offered at affordable prices, though it should be noted that the size of said accommodation may be much smaller than many Europeans are used to; a cultural difference and not a reflection of the ratio of salary to living cost.
With all this in mind it should not surprise you that the government of Hong Kong has implemented rules which ensure that their country is supplied with only the best EFL teachers.
A degree is almost always required for EFL positions. If this is not mentioned in a job advertisement, you should look into it further before accepting, as without a degree you may have difficulties in obtaining your visa. As well as this the vast majority of academies will require you to obtain an EFL qualification of 120 hours or more. Requests for previous work experience may vary, however, and it is always worth conducting a Skype interview in order to demonstrate your interest and enthusiasm if you do not have references to offer.
As well as private academies, the NET scheme, a territory-wide idea implemented to increase waning levels of English, may be able to provide trained EFL teachers with even higher salaries, inclusive of accommodation.
For most the typical working week can be between 25 and 30 hours. Work environments are usually comfortable, while resources and materials are of a high standard. If you are lucky enough to find a position, your school or academy should provide you with a letter of sponsorship which will allow you to obtain your visa. It is also very likely that a well-run school will assist in finding accommodation for you and offer other services such as collection from the airport.
