South Africa Job Listings

South Africa is a truly unique country offering an eclectic mix of cultures, languages, customs and history. The country’s large area is home to a vast array of natural beauty, from stunning coastlines, tropical rainforests and arid desserts to sprawling mountain ranges. These habitats all support a huge range of wildlife and South Africa is an excellent place to observe animals on a safari.Surfing and other outdoor pursuits are also popular pastimes due to the generally mild climate.TEFL jobs in South Africa are an excellent way for ESL teachers to experience the country for an extended period of time.

Of the three capital cities in South Africa, Cape Town is perhaps the most wellknown and popular with tourists due to its unique mix of interesting architecture, stunning beaches and cultural activities. It is, however, only the third-largest city, with the economic centre of Johannesburg more than twice its size. Both of these cities are good starting points for finding TEFL jobs in South Africa.

The cultural mix that makes up South Africa has resulted in eleven official languages, the most wellknown of which are Afrikaans, Zulu and Xhosa. However, English is very commonly spoken as a second or third language.

Due to the large size of the country, the climate and food are largely variable, however, perhaps the most famous culinary feature to come out of South Africa is the Braai, Afrikaans for BBQ.Grilling burgers, local sausages and ribs and washing it all down with beer is a popular way to celebrate throughout the country.

As English is commonly spoken throughout the country, TEFLjobs in South Africa are not always easy to come by.ESL teachers with TEFL qualifications but no formal teaching qualification from their own country may manage to find some work in the larger cities through private language schools, however some ESL/EFL experience is usually required for these jobs.Volunteer TEFL jobs in rural locations in South Africa are easier to come by and provide an excellent way to gain experience in ESL teaching and also to learn more about the culture of the country.

In higher demand are qualified teachers, particularly in the disciplines of science, maths and technology, to take classes at schools and universities. This type of work requires an application to the South African Centre for Education and will usually only be approved for those with permanent residency or proof of future employment in a school. There may also be opportunities to conduct private ESL classes outside of institutes, as local teachers often wish to improve their English or accent.

Teaching English in South Africa can provide a reasonable salary, varying drastically with experience, from around the equivalent of £700 per month for a new ESL teacher to £6600 for an experienced university professor. TEFL jobs in South Africa do not usually provide accommodation, so ESL teachers need to make their own living arrangements and factor this into their living expenses.A school day generally lasts from 7am to 2.30pm and the school year runs all year with a short break over the Christmas period.

The cost of living in South Africa is generally higher in larger cities and although it has risen in recent years, is still affordable in comparison with Europe.
