After you have completed several years of ESL teaching, you may be interested in working as a professional ESL blogger; in fact, you can work as a professional ESL blogger while still working as an ESL teacher.

Here are a few tips about becoming a professional blogger, but first of all – What is a blog? For those of you that don’t know, here’s a useful definition: “A blog (a truncation of the expression weblog) is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web and consisting of discrete entries (“posts”) typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first).” The people who write blogs are called bloggers. For those of you who are still not too clear about what a blog is – visit the following example of a blog: http://blog-efl.blogspot.co.uk/ Before you even think about working as a professional blogger – make sure that you know how to blog; this includes knowing how to promote your blog, market it, and use the various blog tools. The best way that this can be done is by setting up your own online blog: a good blog hosting site is WordPress at https://www.123-reg.co.uk/web-hosting/free-123-apps/wordpress.shtml: this is the most popular and powerful blog hosting platform on the Internet. You should now train yourself to become an excellent blogger in your area of expertise that is concerned with TEFL matters. You should also take time to establish your online presence: this can probably best be done through social networking and forum participation. Alternatively, you can use guest blogging: guest blogging/guest posting literally means publishing your content on other websites; it’s quite a common practice in digital marketing. You can guest blog on sites such as http://voices.yahoo.com/ and http://hubpages.com/, or on other sites that permit it. When you have decided it’s time to start searching for a professional blogging job, make sure that you only apply to those sites that cater for your particular expertise. You can, for example, find a selection of professional blogging jobs if you follow the three links below:http://weblogs.about.com/od/professionalblogging/tp/FindBloggingJobs.–9N.htmhttp://blog.brazencareerist.com/2012/11/12/10-places-to-find-blogging-gigs-that-pay/http://onlinebusiness.about.com/od/blogging/tp/paid-blogging-jobs.htm

Before you apply for a job, make sure of the following:

(1) you are an excellent blogger; (2) you know how to find subscribers and drive traffic; (3) your writing and proofreading skills are excellent; (4) you have social networking and social bookmarking accounts; (5) you understand Search Engine Optimization (SEO); and (6) you have an excellent online blog site. If you hope to get hired by an online site as a professional blogger, you will have to convince the blog site manager that your writing skills and the content will attract more subscribers which in turn will mean more revenue for the site.
