Cambridge is a city of chapels, museums, university buildings and punting.

It’s home to one of the most famous and prestigious universities in the world and often competes for attention with Oxford. Cambridge is a popular choice for students wanting to learn English, which is why there are more than 20 accredited language schools in this tiny city. Take a walk down any street and you are likely to come across a language school, be it a big name chain or a boutique school.

Working in a language school is the obvious choice for Cambridge. Language schools calculate your wages on an hourly basis, so the more hours you work the higher your salary. Since Cambridge is not usually short of students you can work as hard as you like and earn as much as you like. Language schools offer the opportunity to teach a wide range of classes and gain a lot of experience.

Generally, language schools offer a variety of classes to their students. Students can choose to take General English, Conversation English or Business English. There are classes that focus on grammar, speaking or writing skills. Many classes are to prepare students for a particular exam – FCE, CAE, CPE or IELTS, or classes might focus on a specific purpose, such as English for Nursing or English for Aviation. Classes can have up to 15 students, or it could be a private, 1-to-1 class. Students could be Beginners up to Proficiency level. Working in a language school will mean that no two weeks are ever the same.

Besides language schools, there are other EFL opportunities in Cambridge. As it’s a university city (with more than one university), there are many foreign students living here who need help to keep up with academic life in English. While these students may have been accepted on to a course of study, this does not mean that they will be able to cope when they arrive. Studying in the UK is a big investment and so students will happily pay for extra English lessons if it will help them survive at university. So if working in a language school is not your idea of fun, try finding some private students.
