Oman Job Listings

Oman is a great location for TEFL teachers searching for a more authentic and traditional Middle Eastern experience than is available in many of its neighbouring countries. In recent years it has increasingly opened up to the outside world and people are discovering the joy of a country blessed with sun, fabulous beaches and beautiful mountains. Despite its growing wealth, Oman has maintained a more traditional and low-rise feel than neighbouring countries; this is almost unique in a region that likes to make things higher, bigger, bolder and better than anywhere else in the world.

It is relatively new to the EFL game in the Middle East, but the opportunity to get a good tax-free salary and enjoy plenty of sun and wonderful scenery have quickly made it a popular destination. When you arrive, however, it is worth knowing that you will be entering a country that maintains a strict and conservative culture which is often stifling for Westerners, especially women. However, those able to treat the way of life with respect discover a nation of friendly people that is home to many hidden treasures. The capital city of Muscat can appear quite beguiling from the outside; a city of whitewashed houses surrounded by cragged and barren mountains.

Also, despite being a traditional and conservative Islamic country, TEFL teachers will find plenty of incredible experiences and days out to entertain themselves, right on their doorstep. Wake up one morning under the warmth of the sun having gone for a unique camping trip in the desert. Enjoy exploring any one of the 500-plus forts located around Oman and which make up most of its best-known tourist attractions. Head into the city and get caught up in the buzz of one of Oman’s traditional markets whilst searching for bargains.

Admire the massive hand-loomed rug located in the Grand Mosque in Muscat, once the world’s largest. There is no escaping the fact that Oman is a country with a great deal of sand, for as well as the vast expanses of rolling sand dunes in the desert, you will find hundreds of miles of beaches along the country’s coastline. These fabulous beaches also play host to various species of sea turtle during their breeding season. Most TEFL jobs can be found in the capital Muscat.

At least two years’ experience and a bachelor’s degree to go with a TEFL certificate are necessary to stand any chance of finding work in Oman. The benefits of a tax-free income and lower living costs than other countries in the region will make the effort to find work worthwhile.

Native-speaking EFL teachers are in high demand in the country and you will find that the peak time for hiring is during the late summer months of August and September. Housing, flights and other benefits may be included in your contract, so make sure you find out about these things when comparing employers.

There is the opportunity for all kinds of TEFL jobs in Oman, with native speakers being employed everywhere from kindergartens, to secondary schools and universities, and also as in-house teachers at multinational companies.
