How to Begin Teaching in Brazil

Formidable Booming and Developing Economy

Brazil is tipped to be one of the main world leaders in the future.

Brazil is by far the largest country in the Latin American block. With its formidable booming and developing economy, Brazil is tipped to be one of the main world leaders in the future. Brazil is a country of multicultural fusion, emanating from its mixed history. This country combines European, African, Native American, as well as Japanese and Arabic influences in its food, architecture, music and culture. This creates a rich and colourful landscape for the visitor to explore. The people are also stylish, friendly and charming. Portuguese is the language of Brazil and one worth learning during your stay.

Brazil not only offers the urban experience in Rio de Janeiro and other cities, but also allows for outdoor pursuits. The natural landscape of the country is just as rich as its cultural heritage. From spectacular beaches, to the Amazon rainforest, to the largest waterfall in the world, Iguaza Falls, right to the wetlands in Pantanal, and the Mata Atlantica (Atlantic forest), there is always something to see and explore. Brazil borders most countries in the region, with the exception of Ecuador and Chile. This makes it an ideal destination for those seeking to travel to other Latin American countries.

There are 64 national parks and over 200 conversion units in the country. Lencóis Maranhenses National Park is a very interesting place as its is home to sand dunes that come from ocean currents and from the wind, reaching up to 40 metres in height.

It is impossible to mention Brazil without football in the same sentence. The sport is a national obsession in Brazil and is played everywhere, from the streets to the beaches and everywhere else inbetween. The country has produced some of the greatest players in the games history such as Pelé and Ronaldo. Brazil have won the world cup a record 5 times. They are currently considered one of the best national teams in the world.

Teaching Opportunities

Due to the economic status of Brazil, English is in high demand. This has also been boosted by the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games. Jobs are readily available in Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Belo Horizante, Florianopolis and Sao Paulo. The demand for business English is huge, but there are also opportunities to teach in language schools and state institutions. For state institutions, you need to have qualifications to teach. In other sectors this is not a prerequisite. In some cases, prior experience and a 120-hour TEFL certificate can increase the amount of salary you receive. Benefits packages, such as accommodation and flights are rarely offered.

It is possible to find jobs for Brazil online, but many companies prefer that you are in the country for interviews. Work visas are also difficult and lengthy to obtain. Many teachers work on a 6-month tourist visa and then leave the country for a day in order to renew it. Most contracts are for 25 hours a week of teaching. The students in Brazil are one of the highlights of teaching here. With their enthusiastic, energetic and motivated demeanour, they are a delight to teach.

One point that you need to consider when choosing Brazil, is that the cost of living is also quite high, particularly accommodation. Shopping at local markets and eating in local restaurants, rather than foreign chains, can reduce this cost. Many teachers supplement their income, to boost their living standard, through private tutoring.
