Ideas for your first lesson

Your first lesson with a new class can be daunting. You might be nervous, especially if you are a new teacher. With a new class, you probably don’t know your students, their interests and capabilities, and they won’t know you or your teaching style.

As the teacher, it is up to you to set the tone for all your lessons. Because of this, you want to make sure you are confident, entertaining and effective so that you convey your best characteristics in your first lesson.

Activities for your first lesson need to help your students get to know each other if they don’t already, as well as get to know you. You can use this opportunity to learn their names and assess the language levels of your students. And, of course, they need to teach English!

There are a number of activities which are suitable for your first lesson with a class, but here are a few of our favourites:

  • Introduce your partner
  • Class mingle
  • Get-to-know-you bingo
  • I have never
  • The toilet roll activity

These are just a few ideas for you. Remember, the most important part of any lesson is to have fun!
