Objectives For TEFL Resumes

Creating a resume for any job can be tricky, and it’s no different for a TEFL job. It is sensible, though, to put together a resume specifically aimed at TEFL jobs, rather than adapting your usual resume. So when you are thinking of applying for that dream job, keep these points in mind:

• Keep it short and sweet. Keep to the main points while providing only basic details. Employers often get loads of resumes so they only need to know the main ideas; they can ask for details in the interview.
• Any and all teaching experience is a plus. Even tutoring when at university shows that you have experience in the classroom, with students, preparation and assessment.
• Any TEFL experience should be detailed by the ages and levels of students, types of class and number of hours taught.
• Other jobs can also be stated, though briefly and if they can be seen to have some relevance to teaching, such as working as an Accountant which means you could teach Maths. Part-time waitressing work should probably be left off.
• Other skills, interests or qualifications can be a bonus, such as an IT degree or a Science degree. This can suggest that you will be able to teach not only English, but another subject, which is very useful in a school situation.
• Playing in a sports team or other hobbies are great if you are applying for a summer school position as it shows your flexibility and that you might enjoy other responsibilities besides teaching.
• Other skills appropriate to the classroom should be mentioned, such as the ability to use Interactive Whiteboards or writing your own materials.
• A personal statement on your strengths is a good idea, to highlight the qualities valuable to a teacher that may not have been learnt – for example, public speaking, good knowledge of English grammar, and experience with children. If possible, provide short, concrete examples to support your statements.

As with any other resume, keep in mind the position you are applying for and make sure the information you include is relevant and appropriate.  A brief paragraph explaining your work history which does not apply to teaching is adequate without going into unnecessary details. Add in some TEFL-related vocabulary, such as communicative approach and learner-centred classroom, and you’ll have employers knocking on your door in no time.
