Teaching In An Orphanage In Kenya
I have just returned from a life-changing teaching contract in Kenya. I was very fortunate to be able to stay in an orphanage and teach within Homa Bay, which is 8 hours west from the capital, Nairobi.
The orphanage housed 13 friendly and welcoming children aged from newborn through to 16, who spoke limited English, but expressed their loving natures nonetheless. I was made to feel welcome and a part of their caring family from the second I arrived.
Being able to experience their day-to day-life was an incredible opportunity where I learnt a lot about their way of life living in a Third World country, including having no running water and very little electricity.
The school was small and very poorly-built, with nothing more than a blackboard and a limited number of desks within each of the 9 classrooms, where at least 3 children shared a small space. Nevertheless, the children were extremely happy, well-behaved and very welcoming at all times. They were unbelievably grateful for something as small as a pencil, and seeing the smiles on their faces when they each received one as a gift is a significant memory that I will keep for life.

Although the teaching style was very different to that in the UK, the teaching staff were very keen for me to teach as much as possible, adopting their strategies, and were very supportive in the process.
I felt incredibly privileged to have had the opportunity to teach in a setting whereby all children are eager to learn and were always very attentive.The trip as a whole was a very valuable and rewarding experience and something I look forward to embarking on again in the near future.
