If you look at job postings for TEFL job opportunities, you’ll see that the majority of TEFL employers look for a TEFL certificate and an undergraduate degree. So if you don’t have a degree, it might seem a bit hopeless. Never fear, though, because that’s just according to the job listings and the specifications. The reality of the situation is completely different.

There are a few important things that employers look for in a potential employee: language skills, nationality, qualifications and experience. The criteria for choosing a teacher are not set in stone and many factors play a part in the decision as to whether you are employable or not. If you think about it, the requirement for a degree is an odd one, as employers are not picky about what qualification you have. As far as the TEFL world is concerned, if you have an Engineering degree you are as qualified to teach as someone with a Teaching degree. So it makes sense that there are other circumstances which will help your case if you do not have a degree.

Especially if you are from an English-speaking country and/or English is your first language (or you can prove your English ability), employers are often willing to overlook any issues with qualifications.  In other words, your language skills go a long way to compensating for not having a degree.

So, if you don’t have a degree there are definitely still opportunities available for you but you may need to read between the lines and apply with a cover letter which shows why you should be considered for the position, even if you don’t meet the stated requirements. Writing a good cover letter will not only prove your language ability but also highlight your skills and talents which will be useful in a teaching situation.

If you can get some teaching experience, through volunteering or private lessons, this will help as well, as experience is king. If you have experience, it means that someone else was willing to hire you and that you were capable enough to survive the job, which means that you could probably do it again.

In terms of actually finding jobs, there are numerous places which are known as destinations which are friendly to teachers without qualifications. Try looking in South American countries, especially Brazil and Argentina, Thailand, Vietnam, Spain, Italy and Greece. Schools in smaller, more remote areas are also more flexible when it comes to qualifications so if you’re prepared to leave the big city behind, you’re more likely to find work (even in Europe). Finally, South East Asia is still a known destination for those without degrees.

All in all, there are definitely opportunities if you don’t have a degree. Having a TEFL course under your belt is the deciding factor so you’re sure to find something to suit you.
