Sound familiar? If you are looking for a TEFL job chances are you would have noticed that the majority of job advertisements stipulate that applicants must have a degree and don’t cater for TEFL teachers without a degree. Does this mean that if you don’t have a degree you cannot become a TEFL teacher? Absolutely not. What it does mean is that you need to choose your TEFL destination carefully.

How to Apply for a TEFL Job without a Degree

Though it may seem unfair, the reason many employers ask for a degreed teacher is not related to their own preferences. There are many countries which require teachers to have a degree in order to be given a work permit. Because of this, there is no point trying to convince a school to employ you. Instead, be more selective about which jobs you apply for. Don’t waste your time applying for jobs you cannot get.

So, the first step for TEFL teachers without a degree is to look for the right job. Search online jobs boards to find posts that don’t have the requirement of a degree. You can also choose to look through TEFL course providers like The TEFL Academy who can point you in the right direction.

Then you need to sell yourself. Even though you may not have a degree, make sure you mention whatever education and relevant experience you may have, especially if it’s teaching. Think outside the box and be sure to include details such as the summer you coached teens football or those years you assisted in a kindergarten or the time you volunteered teaching adults to read.

This should also include your experience outside of the teaching environment. More and more, EFL teachers are being asked to teach other subjects, such as Business or Life Skills. You might be the perfect person to teach a certain subject because you have real-life experience in it. Just because you don’t have a degree doesn’t mean you don’t have other skills.

TEFL Destinations for TEFL Teachers without a Degree

Finally, do your research and find out which countries are more likely to hire you regardless of whether or not you have a degree. Here are a few of the more popular ones:

The European Union – if you have an EU passport, you can teach anywhere in the EU without the need for a work permit. Consequently, many schools in the EU don’t require their teachers to have a degree. While some countries are stricter than others, countries like Spain, Italy and Poland are more welcoming.

South America – this continent is positively brimming with job opportunities for TEFL teachers without a degree. Argentina and Brazil are two of the more popular teaching destinations but if you take the time to look you can find work almost anywhere here.

Asia – not all countries are welcoming to TEFL teachers without a degree, but there are a few that are. If you’re considering Asia and you don’t have a degree, you should consider Cambodia and India.

If you don’t have a degree, don’t despair. It’s still possible for you to find a job as an EFL teacher – just be sure to market yourself well and find schools which will appreciate your many skills.
