If you’re thinking about taking The TEFL Academy TEFL course, you might be wondering just what qualities you need to teach English and make a good TEFL teacher.

Qualities that will help you teach English

  • Be organised
  • Be patient
  • Be confident
  • Be friendly
  • Be a good communicator
  • Be adaptable

Be Organised

You’ll need to prepare and plan lessons to teach English as a foreign language. And, maybe you’ll also have to find extra resources for your students. that means you need to set aside time to get these jobs done properly. If you rush you might find that your lesson planning doesn’t go quite how you wanted it to. You’ll either go over time and not manage to cover everything you needed to in the lesson or you’ll finish too quickly and have a struggle to fill in the time that’s left.

Patience

Children in particular can be challenging. They get bored easily and they aren’t as motivated to work as adults. You need patience and understanding to teach English as a foreign language to young learners and teenagers.

Confident

You’ll probably feel nervous when you first teach English as a foreign language. But, try to look confident in class because if you’re confident your students will be too.

Friendly

You will need to show your students that they have to be disciplined in class, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be friendly. Show interest in what they do and try to give positive feedback. That way your students will enjoy coming to class and do their best for you.

A Good Communicator

It’s important that you can communicate well if you want to teach English as a foreign language. You need to be clear when you are explaining topics to your students and you’ll often have to make something boring or tricky sound interesting and easy to master.

Adaptable

If you want to travel while you a teach English as a foreign language, then you will have to adapt to new countries and situations. Not all schools are the same. One year you might be teaching 15 children in a class and the next year it might be 30. You must be ready to accept and embrace each new situation.

Jenny Mason says

I am due to retire in December 2019 and looking to doing something meaningful with my time. Are there options available to teach English for someone who is 70? I would be able to teach online. I have worked for an online institution for 25 years responsible for marketing and projects.
I look forward to hearing from you.
