Is TEFL right for me?

Lawyer. Mechanic. Chef.

It can be difficult to know which career path is right for you. Traditionally, we have been brought up to choose one job for life. Imagine!

Thankfully, that’s not the norm these days. More and more we are choosing flexible career paths.

And if you’re looking for something similar, let us introduce you to the world of teaching English as a foreign language.

What is TEFL?

TEFL is teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Even without any teaching experience, with a TEFL certificate you are qualified to be a TEFL teacher abroad, in your home country, or online.

The beauty of TEFL is that it can be a short-term commitment or a full-time career, depending on your needs. Some of our graduates spend a year or two teaching English in Asia or South America before returning to their original careers. Others become TEFL teachers for life!

Would I be a good TEFL teacher?

Even though TEFL is a good career move, the question you might be wondering is, would I be a good TEFL teacher?

Let’s look at the qualities of a good TEFL teacher and find out if you tick all the boxes.

To be a good TEFL teacher, you should be:

  • Communicative
  • Friendly
  • Warm
  • approachable
  • Adventurous
  • Adaptable
  • Patient
  • Fluent in English

You don’t need to have a degree or be a qualified teacher to be a TEFL teacher – that’s what a TEFL course is for. You don’t need to be a native English speaker to be a TEFL teacher.

You do need to have the right personality, temperament and motivation.

How do I choose a TEFL course?

TEFL courses are a dime a dozen these days, so it makes sense to do your due diligence and find the course which not only suits you best but is a reputable course.

Choose a TEFL course which suits your lifestyle. An online TEFL course gives you the flexibility and convenience of completing the course at your pace in your own time.

A TEFL course with The TEFL Academy is available 24/7 so it doesn’t matter where in the world you are, or if you are a night owl or an early bird. You have access to your course for six months so if life gets in the way for a while, you can pick up the slack as soon as you can.

If you are looking at TEFL for just a short time, a Level 3 TEFL course is suitable for you.

But if you are thinking long-term, a Level 5 TEFL course is a better option for you.

And the great thing about TEFL is:

  • you can try it and you can change your life, or
  • you can try it, have an adventure, and go back to your old life.

If it sounds like teaching English as a foreign language is the right fit for you, why not start today?!
