Teaching English can be a challenge, especially when you are starting out and lack the experience that is generated over time, however you shouldn’t worry; there are lots of resources and platforms which can assist you in preparing and executing a great lesson.

Your TEFL course is a fantastic opportunity to take ideas from others doing the course with you. Many people think that your TEFL should be about leaning the grammar and mastering the complexities of the English language. This isn’t to say you shouldn’t do this, but you can always learn a grammar point later, but it’s critical to also develop ideas, games, and activities. Use this weekend to its full advantage, what you learn will be invaluable once you’re in the classroom.

When you’re planning a lesson, the first thing that you should always refer to is the curriculum which has been provided for you. The complexity and detail of the lesson plan may vary greatly. When you are teaching children it might just be a set of vocabulary, for more advanced learners it might be a complex grammar point. The book should also be of some use to you. Even if it is only for a few exercises, it’s always worth incorporating the book into the lesson. The quality of books that schools use varies greatly; some will have fun, extensive lesson plans, and others may hardly be worth using.

So you have your grammar point and some text book exercises, but that hardly makes a lesson. So what now? When you are an English teacher it’s imperative to learn from your fellow teachers. You might be alone when you’re in the classroom, but you can all share ideas in the staff room. Others may also have more experience so pick the brains of those who have been teaching for longer than you have.

The internet is littered with websites that offer advice and resources for teaching English. Though many of them might be useful, you have to make sure you choose an activity which is the correct level for your students, it’s really easily to mistakenly think an activity is appropriate for them when actually it’s much too difficult. For this reason, it’s often a good idea to take the principle of an activity you find online, but then substitute the set of vocabulary with words you know the students have learned.
