With the plethora of online platforms and companies offering English language lessons to learners and teaching positions to English teachers and tutors, it is difficult to know which online teaching companies are legit.
We’re going to get to the bottom of this by asking the people who really know what they’re talking about: the teachers themselves.
In this series, we talk to teachers currently teaching online in 2025 and ask them the important questions.
Meet Sonya, a former CARROT Global tutor
Hi, I’m Sonya, an international English teacher and teacher trainer!
My teaching journey began in 2019, spending three years in South Korea teaching elementary learners (yes, right through the pandemic). These days, I teach students of all ages and levels online, from Beginners to professionals across Europe, Asia, and beyond.
I get the most joy from making meaningful connections and helping learners grow, because English isn’t just a language skill, it’s a life-changer.
I’ve also had the chance to train new teachers, designing and leading workshops on accent reduction, soft skills, tech tools, and the ins and outs of online teaching.
It’s the students’ stories, their progress, and those breakthrough moments — when students overcome what once felt impossible — that make this work deeply rewarding.
Surviving the South Korean classroom mid-pandemic, then coaching new teachers, Sonya has been through it all and is still smiling.
So where does CARROT Global fit into this picture?
Why did you choose CARROT Global?
I came across CARROT Global on LinkedIn and was immediately intrigued. After exploring their website and reading teacher reviews, I realised they met all my key criteria.
I was looking for a…
✅ professional, well-established company that values teacher growth through ongoing development opportunities, and focuses on adult professionals.
✅ company with a strong reputation for quality, clear communication, and teacher support, which gave me confidence that this was the right fit for my career.
✅ weekday schedule with no weekend commitments.
✅ fair and transparent hourly rate.
CARROT Global ticked every box.
Sounds like CARROT Global understood the assignment!
How long did you teach at CARROT Global, and what was your experience like?
Although I taught with CARROT Global for just a few months, the experience was incredibly enriching. I worked with motivated adult professionals through both phone calls and Zoom classes, using a well-organised Learning Management System (LMS) and a range of quality online resources.

Their self-paced training videos helped me quickly sharpen my skills in time management, multitasking, and educational technology.
Despite being brief, my time with CARROT Global gave me a real confidence boost and strengthened my abilities as an online educator.
How easy was it to start teaching?
I applied through LinkedIn and had a smooth interview with the local manager.
After completing two evenings of intense training on CARROT Global’s Learning Management System (LMS), I was ready to begin.
The support I received made the process manageable. My local manager was exceptional, providing the guidance I needed to feel confident from day one.
I got my first students on the first day, starting with a lighter schedule that increased as I proved my ability to manage classes. Students were assigned based on my hours, so there was no competition for them.
Did the platform allocate students to you, or did the students have to choose the teacher?
At CARROT Global, students are assigned to you based on your chosen teaching hours, rather than them selecting their own teachers.
This approach fosters consistency, as you typically work with the same students throughout their course. It also requires daily feedback reports and a progress evaluation every two weeks.
Since students are assigned rather than chosen, you can focus more on teaching and tracking progress without the stress of competing for bookings.
Students from day one and no booking battles sounds like an online teacher’s dream. But let’s be real, it’s not a complete dream without decent pay to match. Sonya breaks it down for us.
What was the pay structure?
CARROT Global’s starting rates range from $9 to $11 per hour, depending on your qualifications, experience, and demo lesson performance.
From there, teachers can move up a tiered pay system based on teaching hours, student feedback, punctuality, and professional conduct. With consistent performance, it’s possible to earn above $11 per hour over time.
There’s a handy ‘pick-and-add’ system where cancelled or open lessons are made available. If they fit your schedule, you can claim them for extra pay.
Decent pay, flexibility with room to grow, plus rewards for consistent work? Sounds fair enough.
What did a typical day look like for you?
I usually taught a four- to five-hour shift from 12 PM to 5 PM South African time, which matched peak evening hours in Asia. This schedule suited the professional adult learners I worked with and helped fill my calendar.
Classes can be anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, and it’s common to have back-to-back lessons.
Three straight 10-minute classes will keep you on your toes — juggling the LMS, Zoom or VoIP phone software, feedback forms, and admin windows down to the last second.
The role is demanding, requiring focus and multitasking, but it offers a supportive environment and requires strong attention to detail.
Lessons are conversational but highly structured.
CARROT Global provides detailed plans and teaching tutorials (especially for exam prep), and they expect you to follow them closely while still giving students plenty of speaking time.
Familiarising yourself with the system during training makes the workflow smooth, and once you’re up to speed, the schedule and workload become manageable.
Working from home can get lonely. Nothing that puppy eyes and tail wags can’t solve!
Plus, with students joining your lessons, you’ve got plenty of lively companions, even if they’re virtual.
Speaking of which…
What were your students like?
Most of my students were adult professionals, but I also taught high school and university students from South Korea and Southeast Asia.
The group was diverse — ranging from executives and government workers to military personnel and students — with varied goals like conversation, business English, and exam prep.
Understanding Asian learning culture is key.
Confident students speak freely, while others are shy and need gentle encouragement to participate.
Seeing students grow over their courses and building rapport was incredibly rewarding. Every student brought something unique, making the experience rich and never boring.
How did the student feedback system work?
Students are encouraged to leave ratings and comments after lessons, which often include kind, motivational feedback, which is especially rewarding after tough classes.
Teachers submit daily participation reports and biweekly evaluations, all reviewed by the local manager who offers support as needed.
There’s also a “Teacher of the Week” ranking to recognise top performers and share best practices.
Weekly Quality Assurance topics focus on specific procedures, helping teachers stay updated and maintain high standards throughout their work.
Having that kind of recognition can really boost a teacher’s motivation and confidence.
Was teaching on this platform sustainable as a full-time job?
CARROT Global can definitely support full-time teaching, especially if you value flexibility and enjoy working with adult professionals. The steady stream of assigned students and lack of competition for bookings mean your schedule is predictable, which is a big advantage.
That said, there are busier and quieter seasons, so it’s important to prepare and budget accordingly.
You get Korean public holidays off, which is a nice break. You can also request time off when needed — great for maintaining a work-life balance.
The hourly pay is mid-range compared to other platforms, so building up your hours and maintaining strong teaching quality is key to moving up the pay tiers.
CARROT Global was a solid primary income source, especially when combined with remote teacher training work.
But many teachers (myself included) supplement their income by teaching private lessons or on other platforms.

Did you experience any technical issues?
Honestly, I never had any technical issues with CARROT Global’s systems — they’re well-maintained and run smoothly.
That’s what we like to hear!
Most challenges occur early if you don’t fully engage with the training manual or practice navigating the platform. Tasks like launching classes, opening feedback forms, and managing multiple screens (which is recommended) can get tricky.
System updates happen outside working hours and never interrupt lessons. There’s a daily report board that quickly communicates any issues or changes, often before you even notice them.
Regarding load shedding, the contract required a UPS for uninterrupted classes. I used a heavy-duty one that powers all my devices for four to five hours, so power outages never affected my teaching.
The training I received gave me the confidence to work independently without problems.
Being prepared is part of being a teacher. When teaching online, that means having spare lesson plans, extra activities on hand, and a reliable backup power source.

They offer clear opportunities for career advancement and internal promotion for teachers who show dedication and potential.

Would you recommend CARROT Global?
Absolutely.
I’d recommend CARROT Global to anyone looking for a professional, supportive, and stable online teaching environment, especially if you enjoy working with motivated adult learners.
Their structured approach, steady student assignments, and focus on teacher development really set them apart.
The pay might not be the highest out there. But the consistent hours, supportive management, and opportunities for growth make it a great option for serious online teachers looking to build long-lasting relationships with a world-renowned school.
CARROT Global keeps things simple and professional. If you’re looking for steady work with decent support, it’s a good choice. The pay won’t wow you, but the structure and consistency might be just what you need.
