Just because you can speak English does not necessarily mean you can teach someone to speak English. This is something that needs to be remembered if you are thinking about teaching. In order to become any kind of a teacher you need to go through training – both theoretical and practical – and teaching English as a foreign language is no different.
The TEFL course is there for you and your students as much as it is for your future employers. The TEFL will show to your employers that you have been through the training necessary to be effective in the classroom. It will give you confidence to stand on your own two feet in the classroom, and it will help you students because, by the end of the course, you should know what you’re doing.
But you can’t really know what you’re doing if you’ve never done it. This is why you need to have classroom experience before you actually step into the classroom. It’s all very well thinking that you can learn as you go along, sink or swim, but these are real students that you are dealing with, who have paid good money and are spending their time trusting you to teach them something. You owe it to your students to know what’s what.
Not to mention the fact that being on your own in a classroom which a bunch of expectant faces looking at you, waiting for you to enlighten them, can be awkward and stressful if you have no idea where to start. While it may be possible to think of different classroom scenarios and discuss the different options available to you, it’s not hard to realise that talking about it and doing it are two very different things. In theory, it’s quite easy to deal with a noisy, energetic 2-year old, or a shy 17-year old, or an unmotivated exam student, but in practice it’s a bit more complicated. Even classroom tasks like giving instructions, setting up activities and doing revision exercises need to be practised in a real context in order for it to become more natural for you.
The bottom line is, basically, why would you even put yourself in a situation where you are not prepared, when all that is needed to feel comfortable and capable in the classroom is to take a TEFL course with classroom training? There really is no need to take a course without the practical aspect included. Your future employers, your future students and your sanity will thank you.
The TEFL Academy was the world’s first TEFL course provider to receive official recognition from government regulated awarding bodies in both the USA and UK.
