Your TEFL Interview: How To Prepare

After all your hard work on the TEFL Academy TEFL course, the time has come for you to apply for jobs and have your first TEFL interview.

In most cases, interviews will probably be done using Skype, rather than you having to fly out to the country. Although you’re sitting comfortably at home it can still be as nerve-wracking as actually being in the same room as your interviewer.

Tips to help you prepare for your TEFL Interview

Smile and Look Confident

At least having a TEFL interview over the Internet means you can hide your knocking knees. Even though you’ll feel nervous try not to show it. Smiling will help you to appear more confident. Your interviewer will understand your nerves, but they will also want to see that you can overcome them.

Do some deep breathing before you go online and make sure you’re as relaxed as you can be. If you share accommodation with other people tell them about your interview and ask them not to make too much noise during your interview so that you don’t have distractions.

Be Informed

Find out as much as you can about the school and the country where you want to teach before the TEFL interview. Also practice answers to some basic questions in case you’re asked. For example, you might be asked why you have chosen the country, or what you think about teaching young learners. What you think your strengths are and why you want to teach English as a foreign language. You might also be asked what level you prefer to teach and how you would settle down a lively class.

Obviously, you can’t guess all the questions. But, you can get some idea of what you might be asked.. Search the Internet for TEFL forums and ask other teachers.

Think of some Questions for your TEFL interview

Asking questions shows you’re enthusiastic about the post. You could ask about the size of the school, or if it has a dress code. You could also ask if there are other teachers from your country or what age are the young learners. Don’t ask too many questions, but one or two and the interviewer will know that you are interested.

Remember:

  • A friendly smile will make you look confident even if you’re not
  • Knowing something about where you’re going will demonstrate enthusiasm
  • Questions will show that you’re keen

Enjoy the experience of your TEFL interview and be yourself. If you don’t get the first job your interviewed for, don’t throw in the towel. There are lots of reasons why you might not have been chosen. Apply for your next post and before you know it you’ll be on a plane and on the way to your dream job.
