How to teach speaking in the EFL classroom

Teaching speaking is an important aspect of teaching English as a foreign language. As you can imagine, the majority of English language learners are learning English to be able to speak English and understand spoken English.

Teaching speaking in the EFL classroom involves not only teaching vocabulary and grammar, but also pronunciation – individual sounds, intonation and rhythm. You need to focus on the functions involved in speaking, such as agreeing and disagreeing, asking for advice, giving opinions, speaking on the phone.

The biggest aim for teaching speaking in the EFL classroom is to encourage your students to speak. After all, the EFL classroom is their safe space to practise their English, make mistakes, and improve.
