The basics of teaching English as a foreign language

Teaching English as a foreign language is, in a  nutshell, teaching English to speakers of other languages. It involves teaching vocabulary and grammar, as well as teaching the skills involved in reading, writing, listening and speaking.

If you are a native speaker of English, this does NOT mean you automatically qualify as a TEFL teacher. In order to be a TEFL teacher you need to have a recognised TEFL qualification. By the same token, if you are not a native-speaker of English, there is no reason you can’t qualify to be a TEFL teacher

TEFL teachers can work in a variety of environments. TEFL teachers can teach in kindergarten, primary shool, high school or university. You can also work in a language centre teaching children or adults, or in-company. And of course you can teach privately and online. TEFL teachers can work in both English-speaking countries, as well as those countries which have a different language as their national language.
