Loving Every Second Of Teaching In Thailand
My name is Caro Piqueras. I’m 27 years old and I’m originally from Argentina. I say originally, because for the past 5 years I’ve been living and working around the world, so I like to think myself as a world citizen rather than just an Argentinian traveling.
These past years I lived 2 years in Barcelona -where I worked as an advertiser and a nanny-, then I moved to Australia for 6 months -where I worked as an au pair- and that same au pair job led me to New Zealand where I lived for 16 months.
While I was in New Zealand, after more than 4 years of working with kids (together with other jobs), and after giving it a long thought, I decided to become a TEFL teacher. During all my years traveling, I heard lots of people talking about being English teachers and traveling the world, but all of them were native speakers (from England, Canada, Australia and New Zealand), so I didn’t think I could make that career path possible for myself being a non-native speaker, but I decided to give it a chance. Anyways, I wouldn’t lose much by trying, right?
So I did my TEFL course in Auckalnd, New Zealand and until today it was, by far, the best decision I’ve ever made. Now, I’m into my second year contract in a language school in Thailand, and I’m loving every second of it. I live in a small town called Trat.
“I learnt lots of new techniques and tricks to succeed in the classroom and they all led me to where I’m now.”
It’s a beautiful place and I get to experience the Thai culture every day. I’m currently teaching 80 students!!! I have 7 big classes -from 3 to 16 years old-, and around 6 1-to-1 classes. The students are great! Really dedicated but, what’s more important, they are really polite, well mannered and adorable. I love every second I’m at school. Even though I had a fair amount of years of experience working with kids, the TEFL course helped me to channel all that experience into the classroom.
I learnt lots of new techniques and tricks to succeed in the classroom and they all led me to where I’m now. I like to think I’m a good teacher who can get even better. That’s why I keep educating myself every day, but the TEFL course is a great place to start. I found my calling in teaching and I will do it for the rest of my life. It’s a job that fills me up with joy, happiness and amusement every single day, and I want to keep feeling that for the rest of my life.
And, what’s not less important, I can WORK AND TRAVEL all around the world!!! These past 16 months I’ve traveled more than the other 26 years of my life, so I owe that to my TEFL career. If you’re also passionate about teaching, working with kids and teens and traveling, then I’m almost certain that a TEFL career would be a great option for you. And, if you’re a non-native speaker like me, don’t be scared or get discouraged. I know we have some tough competition out there, but you cannot teach someone how to be caring, loving and passionate about what you’re doing, you’re born with that, so hold onto that and go get your certificate! You’re one certificate away to start living a great life!
