An Amazing New Career in a Far and Distant Land
Being in a very similar situation to a lot of young people I have met, I was at a bit of a loss as to which direction to take after completing my degree.
I left the University of Liverpool in 2014 and decided to stay there for another year where I enrolled on the TEFL course but always knew that living and working in the UK wasn’t for me. I did however know for definite that I wanted to pursue a career in English teaching after completing the 20-hour in-class training. It was great for building confidence for anyone like me who had never taught before and I found it to be extremely interesting. I especially enjoyed the interactive nature of it and thought that it would be something I could enjoy doing in the future.
I had always been interested in travelling but until then had only managed to venture to Thailand for one month, largely due to lack of funds. When I discovered how much money I could earn and what an amazing experience teaching English abroad could provide, I jumped at the chance. I have been living and working in Chengdu, South West China for three months now and will be here for nearly another month and it has been an incredible experience. Everyone I have met is similarly aged and like-minded to me. One thing is for sure you will not struggle to make new friends. China is a fast-moving and interesting society to live and work in. I have found the locals I have met to be incredibly hardworking, decent, friendly people who are always willing to lend you advice and assist in any way.
“If you enter your new experience with a positive attitude then you will be fine.”
The city and surrounding area is home to over 14 million people and hosts some amazing architecture, breath-taking scenery, some truly delicious cuisines and of course the adorable pandas. I have found, for the most part, the children in China are respectful, good natured and generally a pleasure to teach and in my opinion their eagerness to learn and interact surpasses those in most societies of the west.
If you enter your new experience with a positive attitude and accept that there will be a few challenges along the way then you will be fine. The TEFL Academy have been fantastic in providing any necessary support and I would highly recommend both the course and teaching English as a foreign language to anyone. I intend to stay within Asia for the next couple of years and teach mainly in Vietnam and South Korea.
Enrolling on the course is the first step to an amazing new career in far and distant lands. As educated western people we are in such an advantageous position, and we have the ability to help others perhaps less fortunate. At the same time we can further our own careers and see beautiful new places; it’s an opportunity that would be foolish to give up.
