Do What You Love!
My name is Eliise and I am 24 years old. İ am from Northern Europe but now living and working in Turkey as a teacher.
I am a person who likes to discover different cultures and that’s why İ came to Eastern Turkey, to see life away from places that are built up only for tourists. Here in the east, İ was the only foreigner, İ guess.
The culture is very different here, away from my home country. İ went through a culture shock almost every day. But that all expanded my world view and prepared me for my long stay, and as we all know ‘’What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’’.
“Moving to another country can be scary at first, because everything seems to knock you down. But trust me, if you stay positive then success will find you. And you will be mentally stronger than ever.”
So İ started to search for a teaching job for myself, and luckily a private school was looking for a foreign English teacher and got in touch with me. İ was so happy and excited for that opportunity, but İ wanted to be fully prepared.
So, that’s when I did research and found The TEFL Academy’s 168-hour course. This is a Level 5 course and gives me an opportunity to teach different age groups – even adults. This course was so interesting and useful, İ got a lot of new tips and ideas for classroom management. The program is so clear and easy to follow. Thanks to The TEFL Academy I felt prepared and confident to start my first English teaching job in Turkey.
The first day of school was full of excitement and İ felt very welcomed. Students were surprised to see a foreigner teacher in their school. By that time I already knew Turkish but at school I speak only in English (İ have a deal with the school to not show off my Turkish knowledge, so that students will communicate only in English with me. In my lessons we are mainly doing dialogs and different educational exercises. Through that they get encouraged to use their new skills in spoken language. İ’m so grateful for the things that İ’m experiencing now and İ really love what İ do.
Children in Turkey are very energetic and active, so İ have to find clever ways to get their attention. Every lesson must be different from the other. For each class İ give 2 hours per week. One hard aspect of teaching is that İ give lessons for kindergarten, primary school and middle school, so I must prepare my lessons for various levels. But that’s what the TEFL course prepared me for.
