Hi! My name is Kelly Daigle. I am 35 years old and originally from the USA. Prior to teaching English, I worked in various areas of science and health, with my most notable role being that of a laboratory scientist, studying learning and memory at the National Institutes of Health in the USA. Talk about a career change!
I have always had a touch of wanderlust and have dreamed of seeing the world. In early 2017, I put my mind to it and decided to save a bit of money, quit my day job and set off travelling. I opted to get my TEFL qualification as a means of potentially earning an income while doing so. If I am being honest, teaching is one field I never thought I would enter. But, in October 2017, I graduated with my TEFL certification from The TEFL Academy. A month later, I set off on my 3-year long nomadic adventure.
During this time, I travelled to 50 countries in Asia and Europe. One of my first stops was India, where I first taught English as a volunteer in a rural school. There I met some of the most amazing and inspiring kids. I lived at the school; this was a great experience, as I got to meet locals, eat homecooked meals and really explore the local village. Most of my teaching days were spent prepping students for their upcoming IELTS speaking exams. The dreams and goals of my students were truly inspirational and it really made me feel like I was contributing to something important in helping them get to where they wanted to be. I absolutely loved the kids at this school! I still remember the young students chanting as they walked past me at the end of each day ‘goodbye, see you again, goodbye, see you again.
Following my stay in India, I headed to Russia and did homestays with two families, where I helped them practice their English conversational skills daily. Again, this was a fantastic experience – living with locals, learning about a different culture and feeling like I was helping people meet their goals.
In April 2018, I also began teaching English online through VIPKID and Cambly. I have now been teaching online for over 3 years, and have experience teaching my own private students, as well as working with many online ESL companies including Magic Ears, GoGoKid, Whales English, iTutorGroup, and others. I have taught kids and adults, in one on one or small group classes. I love the flexibility working online offers!
I am currently based on the beautiful Sunshine Coast in Australia. In addition to my full-time online teaching, I also spend lots of time helping new and aspiring teachers discover the opportunities in the TEFL industry and get started. I can honestly say, doing my TEFL was the best decision I have ever made. It truly changed my life and my direction, and I couldn’t see myself doing any other career!
