A Country Of Beauty ... And Delicious Arepas!
What were you doing at 18?
Well, life can take you to unexpected places. Even remote places like a little village in Colombia. I can attest to that. My name is Lucas Vigna, I’m an Argentinian eighteen-year-old who for as long as I can remember, has always had a rather inquisitive mind: Constantly learning about languages, countries, international affairs...
All this led me to English: the most widely used lingua franca in the world. I’ve been to private tutors and institutes… which catapulted me into obtaining my C2 proficiency Cambridge Certification at 17.
At the time, I had just finished high school and I already had a job in a world-renowned fast-food chain. The universe told me not to start a degree. However, I wasn’t going to stand still and bring my knowledge acquisition to a halt. I started investigating online what my next step was going to be.
One day, I came across a video of a TEFL ambassador, who went on to tell her wonderful story about how she traveled the world teaching English. Rarely do you hear something like this…
“Too good to be true”, I thought at first. Yet, I had a feeling: that could be me too! Helping solidify education as a key for the future was something that both intrigued and fascinated me.
I then embarked on my TEFL journey. After purchasing the Level 5 Course, I decided to make it a priority: daily, I would get home from work, and make progress on the course, always accompanied by my journal, in which I would note down every single unit and lesson of the course.
Tiring? Perhaps, but no pain no gain…
After completing it and, an opportunity knocked on my door: A woman named Andrea responded to the application I had made months before for a volunteering program in Colombia, teaching English to kids from nine to twelve years old in a private institute.
I was jumping on one leg that Thursday morning. It was a definite yes!
To my surprise, Andrea’s plans were sooner than expected: She wanted me to be there on
Monday! I had no flight, no passport, and no idea where to start! However, I knew it was the opportunity of a lifetime, and couldn’t let it pass me by.
The rest is history: I am now in Barbosa, a tiny village in the state of Santander, having an entire class of students. Each class, they bring some typical food to the classroom for me to try: Arepas with cheese, masato ( a unique drink made with rice and corncob, exotic fruits such as uchuvas, lulos or pitahayas).
These kids are undoubtedly filled with potential and true eagerness to learn. That’s what makes it all worth it. Making an ever-lasting impact on their life, while they make a similar impact on you while in the country of beauty, coffee and welcoming people.
