Teaching in India

Have you ever watched a movie which had the most breathtaking scenery? Did you ever say to yourself “wow? I wish I could go there someday?” Have you set goals and resolutions? Maybe even a bucket list? I am sure you have thought of a life only dreams are made out off.
My name is Rovarsh and having had a successful career as a software support engineer at age 29 the above-mentioned thoughts remained as just dreams. Was I going to work my entire life and then do the things I planned when I turned 60? Will I ever have enough money to do the things I am passionate about? I had sleepless nights thinking about what I really want in life. I needed to make my dreams a reality and my “someday” today. If you have a serious form of wanderlust and are passionate about giving something back to humanity in a positive and meaningful way, then obtaining your TEFL certification is by far one of the best decisions you can ever make in your life! After completing my 168-hour Level 5 certification from The TEFL Academy, I carefully planned my first international destination and applied for an internship in India! After a week my application was approved, and I must admit that the support I received through the entire process was exceptional. After receiving my Visa, I booked my flight and headed across the world. India is one of those countries where your money can go a long way and was a personal choice for me.
I am now teaching in one of the most prestigious boarding schools located in the state of Kerala. Life here is incredible, I live in a guest house on the school property, meals are provided 7 days a week and my days are filled with memories which will last a lifetime. Being an international orientated school I get to interact with students from all over the world including Dubai, Thailand, Oman, Saudi Arabia and even Tanzania as well as from other states of India. I currently teach KG up to grade 7 where classes comprise of between 4 – 12 kids. Having no prior teaching experience and been given the responsibility to teach communicative English is by no means an easy task especially if you are dealing with students from many different cultural backgrounds and boy oh boy was I thankful for the content in The TEFL Academy course. From determining the student’s needs, lesson planning, activities, reading and writing all of which was put into action.
This has been the best time of my life. When I am not teaching, I am exploring this captivating country. I am doing what I love and there is no better feeling than watching your student’s progress over the days even if it’s just saying a simple greeting in English. After India I am heading off to Nepal to look for other job opportunities because being an EFL teacher is just so rewarding!
The best advice I have for someone looking for a truly fulfilling and life-changing experience is to first get TEFL certified, apply for jobs and just take that chance, you have nothing to lose but everything to gain!
