Online English Teaching from Sunny Sydney to Bonnie Scotland
Hi! I’m Roxy. I’m 27 and I was born and raised in Sydney, Australia. I have always had a passion for travel and set off for my adventures when I finished high school.
I studied online through an Australian university so I could work overseas and complete my degree simultaneously. I was doing a Bachelor’s of Business Management because I was convinced that I wanted to own my own cafe one day. I worked as a bar and restaurant manager for many years before deciding to move back to Australia and open my own cafe. I loved owning a business and enjoyed the independence. I soon realised that having a cafe was really restricting my desire to travel. For this reason, I decided to sell my cafe and pursue a career in teaching English.
I studied though The TEFL Academy and completed the Level 5 TEFL Certificate online within 3-4 months. The course was engaging and helped to set me on the right path for becoming an English teacher. I had experience tutoring and teaching kids to ride horses in the past, but I really needed to brush up on my English teaching skills. The 168-hour online course gave me all of the skills I needed to successfully and confidently teach English online.
“I applied for about 10 different jobs at various companies thinking that as a new teacher I would surely get rejected from a few. I got hired for every single job that I applied for!”
All of my mock classes were a hit and I honestly put this down to my great TEFL course. I currently work for Palfish, BlingABC, SayABC and Cambly Kids. Teaching English online has enabled me to live anywhere in the world and work. I am currently living in Scotland and mainly work from home. When my partner and I travel, all I need is my laptop, a good internet connection and some props and I can teach whereever we go!
I have built up a strong base of regular students and they are so lovely. My students love to show me their toys and tell me all about their day. They get to see my dog and really enjoy hearing about what sort of things I get up to after teaching. Teaching online gives me the freedom to schedule my work around my daily activities as I usually teach between 10am – 4pm. I work 4-5 days a week which allows enough free time to really explore Scotland.
In the near future, I plan to keep working online as an English teacher but who knows where we may end up living! So far, I am happy living in Scotland as it is a wonderful part of the world. If you are thinking of teaching English online and you feel like you are out of your depth, fear not! I was feeling the exact same way. Coming from a hospitality background really helped me to interact with the kids and the 168-hour Level 5 TEFL course gave me the skills and confidence I needed to become a great teacher. Draw on your strengths and they will help you to become an amazing English teacher, too!
