A Classic Palmieri High School Experience
“We love only what we understand, and we will understand only what we are taught. We must learn about other cultures in order to understand, in order to love, and in order to preserve our common world heritage.” - a Senegalese poet
Following my Level 5 TEFL course I felt ready to take on a new challenge in Italy! Thanks to my newfound teaching knowledge and armed with useful tips, I felt ready to take on a teaching assignment: Preparing a group of B1+ students for the B2 exam in Lecce.
Lecce is a beautiful city in Puglia which is referred to as “The Florence of the South” due to its impressive Baroque style architecture. The city is located between two spectacular coastlines: the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea which, with their fine, white sand and crystal-clear waters resemble tropical climes.
My class members are lively, enthusiastic and ready to improve their English as well as learn about the contrasts between Italian and British culture. There are many differences in the way the English and the Italians go about their daily lives and this diversity can be highlighted in the fun activities which I use to keep the class stimulated.
The Italian education system can be quite intense and demanding so I try to keep my lessons light-hearted and entertaining in contrast.
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.” – George Bernard Shaw
The students always participate in a fun closing activity at the end of the lessons such as “Headbanz” and The Bomb Game (to revise vocabulary), and Blockbusters to revise phrasal verbs, with clues such as: “Which W.U. means the first thing we do in the morning? (Answer: Wake Up!) or a Kahoot quiz so that they end on a high.
The moral of my experience is that learning can be effortless and fun if lessons are well-planned and carried out effectively! If you are enjoying the lesson, the chances are that your students will too.
