A 6 months course on teaching English as a foreign language
Purpose Statement from UNISA website:
The purposes of this qualification include: - To familiarise learners with the content and basic theories of a number of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, at the basic and intermediate level, and to provide them with a deeper grasp of one or more of these disciplines taken at exit level (level 7), as well as to enable them to place new knowledge in context and to use appropriate methods for seeking resolution of problems; - To provide learners with a variety of basic scholarly and intellectual competencies, including the ability to question critically the assumptions of a limited range of theories and authorities, and to develop an understanding of elementary research methods used within one or more disciplines; - To equip learners with the ability to give an accurate account of scholarly positions and the competence to express their own opinions clearly and coherently, both in written and oral communication; - To prepare learners for post learner study; - To provide learners with a well-rounded and broad education across a number of disciplines, thus preparing them for a wide range of professions crucial to the welfare of society; - To produce learners who are able to think laterally, critically and creatively; - To produce learners who are prepared for life-long learning; - To produce learners who understand the principles of, and are capable of critical citizenship.
A one month course that was offered by a branch of the Witwatersrand University that taught theory and practical skills on local radio broadcasting as a journalist for primarily local radio stations. Part of the course was that we had to create and a record a realistic radio news segment and submit it as an assignment.
High School certificate with merit.
Subjects taken: English (First language), Afrikaans (Second language), Biology, Speech & Drama, Economics and History.
Experience
I started this position as a Warehouse Supervisor and Administrative Assistant. I would supervise the warehouse
staff, assist to prepare orders for delivery and make sure the right paperwork is available, also making sure the
deliveries that come into the warehouse are recorded and stored appropriately. Assisting customers when
making collections or bringing in products for repair.
Since April 2023, I took over from a previous employee in the position of Health and Safety. I compile Health and
Safety files to be audited by clients for compliance, I organize and file documents for health and safety as well as
other office-related
documents and paperwork, doing health and safety inspections and ensuring that all issues
related to health and safety are attended to, booking and procuring items or services for the office and health and
safety needs, liaising with clients via email and telephonically, amongst many other things. End of June 2024, I was
further bestowed the role of HR administrator where I assist with HR Representative with daily administrative tasks
in the office and function as the face of HR for people to come to with their grievances and queries at a more basic
level before needing to escalate to upper management.
My duties were managing the staff and making sure that all monitored sites are monitored effectively, ensuring that they
report any alarms triggered and follow protocol should there be an immediate threat, and ensuring that any connectivity or
camera malfunction issues are reported and resolved in a timely manner. Managing the roster system to report to payroll.
Ensuring that any interpersonal issues or concerns expressed by the staff are mediated by myself or escalated appropriately.
Facilitation of interviewing and recruitment of staff members and facilitating the dismissal process if required. Liaising with
clients on surveillance queries and setting up Standard Operating Procedures for sites, as well as meeting with clients if
necessary. Administrative work. Drafting daily, weekly and monthly reports for the company and for clients. Ordering office
and kitchen supplies.
A contractual au pair position which involved homework assistance, tutoring and creating fun, educational lessons and activities for two boys aged 8
and 11, to assist them with their lack of motivation to learn. I would also occasionally pick them up from school.
I was working as an au pair for a family in Honeydew, Johannesburg. I was taking care of a 10-year-old boy who has ADHD and Dyslexia, as well as his
17-year-old sister when she was home from school in the holidays, by helping her run errands. I helped the boy with homework and his school projects, taking him to
school and picking him up, taking him to extra murals, play dates and doctor's appointments. I also ran general errands for the household like shopping and dry cleaning. I also occasionally did some admin work for my employer.
