"I was not an English language teacher at the onset of my career, nevertheless, the decision to leave IT and make the change, is one I have never regretted."
Besides teaching, I am also an Oral Examiner for various internationally recognized language assessment providers, as well as being involved in translations from Greek to English. I hold a Bachelor of Commerce degree with Information Technology as my major, CELTA and a variety of industry-related certifications both in IT and EFL Teaching. Right now, I am in the process of completing my DELTA certification. Owing to my IT background, I have always been a firm believer in integrating technology with teaching and ultimately enhancing learner experience. In my free time, I make soap and enjoy traveling.
Meagan Gaskell
TEFL Trainer
"One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is building connections with your students, not only learning about their culture but also who they are as individuals. To watch them grow in confidence, progress and achieve their goals is wonderful. "
After a sudden and severe change in her circumstances Meagan enrolled on a TEFL course at her mum’s urging. The rest, as they say, is history,
It was the best decision she has ever made (apart from taking her mum’s advice of course!) Completing her TEFL qualification in 2015 Meagan began volunteering at a number of language schools in the UK, which soon led to paid work in both classroom based and online teaching.
While TEFL offers many opportunities to travel and teach around the world, due to feline commitments, Meagan’s intention was always to stay in the UK. She is now a full time ESOL tutor at a local adult education centre and also teaches young learners at various language schools in Kent during the summer and half term breaks.
Judy Nel
TEFL Trainer
"TEFL training helps to put the language in context and makes learning a new language engaging."
She has been teaching for 20 years. Judy spent 3 years in Taiwan where she taught English as a Foreign language from pre-primary level to business executives, teachers and preparing students for MCAT exams. The experience was life changing. She is also presently involved in developing study skills workshops. In addition to this, she also runs study skills workshops for adults and younger learners, concentrating on the Language used in exams and textbooks with the view to a greater understanding of exam practice. She feels all learning should be interactive, engaging and most importantly pupil-centred. She says, “From my experience, most problems in learning begin with a lack of understanding the language used. TEFL training helps to put the language in context and makes learning a new language engaging. I believe the training course should aim to make the trainee’s confident in their abilities and to give them an opportunity for them to develop their skills.
Jennifer Moffatt
TEFL Trainer
"I love the opportunities for travel, connection and continuous learning that the TEFL industry offers, and encourage new teachers to embrace the whole experience."
She has since taught learners of varied ages, levels and nationalities and her experience ranges from teenage summer camps in Cambridge, to general English teaching in southern Italy and business English training for corporate clients in Paris. Jennifer combines her passion and flair for languages, as well as her diverse teaching and work background, with her intuition as a counsellor, to impart enthusiasm and skills in the classroom.
May Liu
TEFL Trainer
"My favourite topics fall within the domains of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Classroom Management. "
May started off her corporate career working in a hotel but later moved on to work as a marketing manager in a private higher learning institution on the island of Borneo. While at the education institution, she saw the joy that other lecturers derived from their work and that prompted her to go back to university for a total change of career direction. She obtained her postgraduate qualifications in TESL and Linguistics and has not looked back since. She went on to work for 12 years as a senior lecturer in a public university and was involved extensively in lecturing, tutoring, research and publication. She later opted to travel the world and teach. Her classroom experience includes teaching children as young as 6 years old to adults in their fifties. Her favourite topics fall within the domains of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and Classroom Management. Her advice to future EFL teachers is to go for it! It is one of the most fulfilling jobs in the world, especially when you meet your students again many years down the road and they come up to you to thank you for something you taught them back in the day!
Louise Griffin
TEFL Trainer
"Always remember to be kind and supportive to the students."
Originally an Archaeologist, she started teaching as a means to travel and be paid to do so but found that she loved it. Louise loves meeting people and having the opportunity to have a positive influence on their lives. TEFL teaching gives you the possibility to see the world and to really get to know the people in it, as you often learn as much from your students as they do from you. She believes that being genuinely interested in people is key to being a great teacher. She has taught all ages and abilities and enjoys the variety you get in TEFL teaching. Her advice to people new to TEFL teaching is to always remember to be kind and supportive to the students. Happy, comfortable people learn. Be positive and encouraging and you get back positivity and progress.
Jennifer Wilson
TEFL Trainer
"My advice to any prospective teacher is to get to know your students."
She’s worked in private language schools, UK primary and secondary schools and Colleges and taught in all settings from small groups and 1:1 to large classes of noisy teenagers! She has a real passion for travel and has visited over twenty countries. She loves languages and teaches Spanish too! If she could give any prospective teacher two simple pieces of advice it would be, “to get to know your students – if there’s no rapport then you (and they) will be in for a tough time – and to observe other teachers, which is great way to pick up some tips. TEFL could be a short-term way for you to travel, or it could turn into a lifelong career, but I guarantee that it’s a really rewarding job and lots of fun.”
Georgina Newcombe
TEFL Trainer
"My advice for prospective EFL teachers is not to panic about the grammar, but tackle it piecemeal."
The world of TEFL appealed largely due to her low boredom threshold; She enjoys the peripatetic nature of the work, as well as meeting new people on a regular basis. She’s a lifelong horror movie fan and loves a good ghost story. Her advice for prospective EFL teachers is not to panic about the grammar but tackle it piecemeal; research what you’ll be teaching before each lesson, and over time it will all come together.
