Mountains, monasteries and magic
Can you imagine a country which bases its success on happiness rather than economic indicators? Bhutan is that country. A simple, peaceful country nestled between India and China, Bhutan has Gross National Happiness as its central governing principle, meaning that more emphasis is placed on happiness than economic prosperity.
Virtually untouched by the modern world, Bhutan has a lot of natural sights to offer, with very little pollution and very few tourists. In fact, it costs tourists $250 a day for a visa to visit the country, so it’s not surprising that not many people are willing to pay the price and cross the border.
If you do, you will be rewarded richly. Bhutan is a country of dramatic landscapes. Magnificent monasteries hug the edges of cliffs, beautiful palaces line riverbanks and breath-taking hikes will give you extraordinary views of mountain ranges and valleys. What’s more, wherever you find yourself in this beautiful, chances are you will have the place to yourself.
In an age of climate change Bhutan is something of an outlier, being the only carbon negative country in the world, meaning that it absorbs more carbon dioxide than it produces. This is thanks to its lush forests that serves as an absorbant of carbon.
There has been a recent movement to educate the population in Bhutan with new schools being developed and a national plan of educational reform being put forward. For this reason there are English teaching positions available in Bhutan, though not as many as in neighbouring countries.
You could find a position in a government school, a monastic school or an adult literacy school. Some of these are paid positions but the majority are volunteer positions. It is necessary to get a job offer before arrival in the country in order to get the appropriate visa and avoid paying the exorbitant tourist visa fee.
