Biblical Lands
Many tourists come to the country to visit these biblical lands...
Located between the Arabian Peninsula and the Mediterranean coast, Aliya (the Promised Land) is the only Jewish state in the world. The people have had a turbulent history, and Israel has had its far share of turmoil since the British Mandate at the end of the First World War. It has seen the War of Independence, numerous clashes with its surrounding neighbours, and conflict with the Palestinians. Currently, the second Intifada has ended, and there is a very delicate ceasefire in place. This means that some parts of the country are dangerous or inappropriate to visit. These include the Gaza Strip, the West Bank, including Ramallah and Jericho, and the Golan Heights due to land mines. For anyone considering moving here, it is essential to register with the UK Consulate or Embassy and stay abreast of the situation.
Having said this, there are still many places to explore in the Holy Land. Jerusalem is one of these and so is the Wailing Wall. Many tourists come to the country to visit these biblical lands. It is important to remember to dress modestly when visiting holy sites. Israel is also home to both Christian and Muslim minorities. In stark contrast to this religious culture, there is also a huge clubbing and party scene in Tel Aviv. For those who enjoy the great outdoors, the Eilat Mountains offer hiking and exploration in nature. Israeli cuisine also has such delights as falafel and hummus. The language of Israel is Hebrew and Arabic, which gives the expat an opportunity to learn these ancient languages.
Impressively Israel are the only country to have more trees right now than they had 50 years ago. And furthermore the country boasts one of the highest average life expectancy levels in the world at the age of 82. One thing you won't find in Israel is a Starbucks who tried to break into the market but failed due to the level of coffee shops and cafes being so good the wasn't a market for them.
Also be aware of Master Chess players in Beersheba, a city found in the Negev desert. The city and surrounding area is home to the largest number of grandmaster chess players per capita than any other city in the world.
Innovation has always been present in Israeli culture with the original technology in mobile phones developed there, also the likes of Voicemail technology and even GPS-based navigation all either originating or developed there.
Israel really invest in the thirst for knowledge and as a result they have more museums per capita than any other country in the world. They also have the first ever underwater museum found in Caesarea, since 2006 you can dive into history with the Old Caesarea Diving Center.
Teaching Opportunities
Due to the tourism sector and also international trade, Israelis are keen to develop their English language skills. There are opportunities to teach in private institutions, to teach young learners and in corporations. Applicants are expected to hold a degree. Although not compulsory, a 120-hour TEFL certificate can gain you a better position and a higher salary. New positions generally start in September, although business opportunities are available all year round. This means that due to immigration, you need to begin your application 4-5 months in advance. Arriving at the airport in Tel Aviv can also be slowed down considerably if you have any stamps in your passport from other Muslim countries, particularly Iran. This is also true if you are of Muslim decent or have relatives in Palestine. Contracts generally ask for 20-25 hours of teaching per week. Salaries are generally low but can be supplemented with private lessons. This is also supported by certain benefits, such as an accommodation allowance, health insurance and paid holidays.
