Angola Job Listings
Unlike the majority of African countries, where English or French is spoken, the main language of Angola is Portuguese. Angola was a Portuguese colony for around 400 years until 1975; however, the regaining of its independence at that time also led to the start of a bloody civil war that would last for decades and scar the nation deeply. In recent years, however, the infrastructure has started to be rebuilt and the national parks have had wildlife flown in to help give them and the country as a whole the kiss of life.
The number of TEFL jobs in Angola is also slowly growing. It is the people and their joy of life that are the pulse of the country. Angola has very much of a Latin spirit to it and walking around the capital Luanda during the day, you can soak up this flavour with the style of the homes and the passion of the people. Angolans truly love music and dance, something which they refused to give up during the decades of fighting and bloodshed. Take a trip around the city and it can seem as if every road you go down has people dancing and connecting with the sound of music. The music never stops in Luanda, with all musical tastes catered for in one nightclub or another.
TEFL teachers who love to party and enjoy dancing will be in paradise and can stay out with the locals until dawn. Despite being a country rich in diamonds, oil, agricultural land and other natural resources, Angola remains a poor country that is still classified as being ‘third world’. It is a sad reality that the wealth remains controlled by those in the upper echelons of politics and business and that not enough of this money has trickled down to the people of the country. Prices in the capital, however, don’t reflect the overall state of the nation and can actually make New York City look like the local bargain store. A report by The Economist put the average monthly rent in the city at around $15,000 a month, with the cost of some melons in a supermarket at around $100! As a country that is looking to develop both financially and educationally, there is a strong priority on improving adults’ level of English within the country.
There are plenty of job opportunities for both EFL teachers and teachers of other subjects as well. Some EFL jobs may literally involve teaching a class under the shade of a tree, whilst other work can be found in the universities and international schools. Plenty of teaching opportunities require simply a TEFL qualification, but like in many countries, a degree and other teaching qualifications can help open more doors. Most teachers will find that their living conditions are fairly simple and that in some locations you may be living within a walled compound for your security. Unfortunately, your biggest challenge to working in Angola could actually be before you get there, with the length and difficulty of the visa process notoriously prohibitive, along with being very costly.
