Belgium Job Listings
Belgium is well known for a number of things, including chocolate, beer, many world-class footballers and, of course, as the home of the European Parliament. It is also a great destination for TEFL teachers of all levels of experience. Lying in the lowlands of the north of mainland Europe, Belgium is a densely populated country with many large cities contained within its borders and where teachers can base themselves.
If you love all things sweet, then what better afternoon can you imagine than sitting down and enjoying a real Belgium hot chocolate alongside a devilishly tasty waffle or decadent hand-made chocolate, and you could be doing this all whilst teaching a private EFL student too! Indeed, Belgium is home to some of the best comfort foods you will find in Europe, including the most wonderful French fries amongst other things – so make sure you pack your exercise gear if you don’t want to risk piling on the pounds.
Despite having a reputation as not containing much of interest, once you find a TEFL job in Belgium, settle down and begin to explore, you will find there is in fact a vibrant music scene, a non-mainstream and immensely quirky art scene and also plenty of architectural delights to take in whilst you are there. Head towards any city centre and you will usually find the best architecture around the main square. A further surprise is in store should you travel into the countryside and visit the Ardennes. Like the Netherlands, Belgium’s reputation is for being flat. The glorious mountain scenery of the Ardennes, though, will soon put that to bed for anyone who visits.
As you travel around, be prepared to pause in wonder at the deep wooded canyons, take a deep breath as you look out from the mountain peaks and smile in pleasure at the picturesque villages dotted all around. Whether you choose to explore by bike, foot, car or even in a canoe, there is little doubt that you will take away fond memories of the experience.
Belgium is almost the hidden secret for TEFL teachers in Europe. Home to the European Parliament and the headquarters of many multinational companies, there is a huge demand for business English classes in the country. Additionally, as many of the teachers are there because their partner’s job has brought them to the country, there is a relatively rapid turnover of teachers, leading to more opportunities for you to work.
Like other European countries, the best path to working in Belgium is through having an EU passport. Unlike other countries in the EU, however, there is little weight placed on a CELTA or DELTA, instead, a master’s degree combined with your TEFL course can in fact offer you the best chance of finding higher-paid work. EFL jobs at language schools can be found in Brussels and in Belgium’s other major cities, as well as at some universities and similar institutions. You can expect a good hourly rate working at one of these schools, but the best pay is usually to be found with any number of the private students looking for EFL lessons.
